Islamic Relief is attempting to get aid to those on the ground affected by this crisis

Khalid Latif and the Islamic Relief team are on the ground in Bangladesh currently aiding those who are fleeing Myanmar.

See Khalid Latif's livestream video that he recorded.

Humanitarian needs are growing amid horrific violence in  Myanmar.  Hundreds of people have died since violence erupted in Myanmar that has seen more than 160,000 people displaced from their homes, buildings burned down, landmines planted and growing humanitarian needs.  Up to thousands of refugees are expected to cross the Naf river into Bangladesh each day this week and there are harrowing reports of massacres taking place and thousands being turned back at the Bangladesh border. A further 400,000 people are estimated to be trapped in conflict zones in Western Myanmar.

Continued tensions keep many in danger and in need of help. That exacerbates other problems, such as food insecurity: According to the World Food Program, more than 162,000 people are facing food insecurity and another 78,000 people are in need of immediate food assistance.

Combined with the Islamic Relief global family, Islamic Relief USA has helped hundreds of thousands of people. As a family, Islamic Relief has been providing aid across Myanmar since 2012. And in 2015, an official office, Islamic Relief Myanmar, opened.

But as the conditions on the ground remain bleak, the number of people who need assistance and the need for more support grows.

Why it Matters

Moments like these demonstrate our willingness to help others in their time of need.  While there is no amount of money that ever make what happened go away, they need our support. You will always have a special place in their prayers for your support in their time of need and their collective gratitude for your support will always have you remembered.

How You Can Help

Give whatever you can. Whether its $1, $5 ...  $5000 , every bit will make a difference.  And please keep the people of Myanmar and those working to help them in your thoughts and prayers. May Allah reward you for your generosity and give you and your loved ones only the best in this world and in the next.  Ameen.

Our Campaign made it to the press! Please watch and share with others!

as'salaamu alaykum

Alhamdulillah our campaign was covered by NowThis and is getting great traction.  They are also raising money for Islamic Relief and have shared a link to our launchgood page.  Please watch the video at https://www.facebook.com/NowThisNews/videos/vb.341163402640457/266334097569045/?type=2&theater and share/repost so others can watch as well.

Thank you all for your ongoing support.  One repost on average can yield $30 in donations and that goes a long way in saving the lives of so many.

Leaving to Rohingya Refugee Camps in Bangladesh - Your Prayers and Help Needed

as'salaamu alaykum,

In late September of last year, I was blessed to visit the 500,000 Rohingya Refugees of Myanmar in Bangladesh.  It was just a few weeks after Bangladesh opened up its shared borders with Myanmar to those fleeing the increasing violence and genocide taking place there.  Tonight I'll be heading back to the Rohingya camps in Bangladesh and I'm reaching out to you to ask for your prayers, help, and support.

The Rohingya people are still facing severe genocide in Myanmar as we speak. There are now close to 1 Million refugees in Bangladesh who fled the violence and many internally displaced populations still in Myanmar - both without basic resources. I can still recall the faces and stories of each person I met when I last went.  Not one could tell me that they hadn't seen loved ones burned alive in front of their eyes. Not one could tell me that they hadn't seen friend, family, and neighbors shot or slit at the throats. Not one could tell me that they hadn't been separated from people they know and love. The violence unfortunately continues.
To make a contribution and support our brothers and sister in and from Myanmar please visit launchgood.com/Aid4Myanmar2018. Please also share our livestreams and media from our visit to help raise awareness of the situation.
Since my trip last year we have raised as a community almost one million dollars in humanitarian relief funds for the Rohingya people mashallah and covered several programs through it.
  • We have helped over 11,880 people by providing food packages that included rice, lentils, potato, sugar, biscuits, chanachur (Bombay mix), puffed rice, cake, flour, oil, couscous, wheat, and protein.
  • We installed deep tube wells, sanitary latrines, private bathing space and dustbins.
  • We also helped to provide alternative fuel support, solar energy panels, lighting and shelter upgrades and assistance in livelihood projects.
Most importantly we have helped a forgotten people feel remembered.  And we are not done yet.  My goal this trip is to update you all on projects that our funds have been allocated for and to continue to raise awareness around the continued atrocities facing our brothers and sisters. Our ongoing assistance will help a much-needed infrastructure be further established.

2X gift match available for Rohingya Refugee Support

I hope you all are doing well.

The Islamic Center at NYU is raising money for the Rohingya people this Ramadan - $39,000 raised already alhamdulillah - and one of our community members, David Coolidge, has agreed to match up to $10,000 for anyone who donates towards our online campaign at launchgood.com/icnyu4myanmar.  You can read more on Dave's thoughts on the Rohingya crisis at https://amercycase.com/2018/06/02/social-justice-ijtihad-10000-for-the-rohingya/.  If you would like to be counted in his 10K match, be sure to let him know by commenting on his blog post or emailing him at rdavidcoolidge@gmail.com

The Rohingya people are facing severe genocide in Myanmar as we speak. Refugees fleeing the violence in Bangladesh and internally displaced populations still in Myanmar are without basic resources.  I personally have visited the refugee camps in Bangladesh and can tell you horrific stories of what the Rohingya people are facing.  Not one could tell me that they hadn't seen loved ones burned alive in front of their eyes. Not one could tell me that they hadn't seen friend, family, and neighbors shot or slit at the throats.  Not one could tell me that they hadn't been separated from people they know and love.

If you are in NYC, please consider attending our fundraiser with Islamic Relief USA on June 6th.  To buy a ticket please visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/icnyu-islamic-relief-benefit-iftar-for-myanmar-tickets-45045374929

Myanmar Aid Update!

To all those who have donated money to the Myanmar campaign, we at Islamic Relief USA would like to express our deepest thanks and appreciation. We have been really humbled and motivated by the amazing response and donations from the American community. Because of all of your generosity, we have hit our initial Launchgood goal of $50,000, and we have increased our goal now to $100,000.

Our staff is currently on the ground in Bangladesh with Imam Khalid Latif, helping refugees fleeing across the Naf river from Myanmar. Together they are evaluating the need of the people on the ground, collecting stories, and distributing much needed aid. I would encourage you to follow the Facebook page of Khalid Latif as well as Islamic Relief USA to see videos, pictures, and stories that have been collected in the pat few days.May Allah grant mercy and ease to all those suffering in Myanmar, Bangladesh, and all over the world. May Allah grant us all a greater capacity to do more to help those in need, wherever they may be. Thank you all once again!

If you want to do anything more, such as create your own crowdfund campaign, host a fundraiser, or volunteer, please feel free to email me at onassimi@irusa.org.
