Over the years our projects have been funded through educational trips, voluntourism, and corporate volunteering but due to COVID those sources of income have stopped, we managed to survive on savings in 2020 but in 2021 it's a different story.
We have received some very generous grants from The Habitat Foundation and Reef Check Malaysia which will help us to start some great things on the islands which will involve the villagers and youth in decision making for their islands. However, we still need to pay rent, boat fees, food stipends for our interns etc and without tourism coming back until 2022 we now need your help to make ends meet.
Below you will find some of the new activities we will do in 2021 to train the youth in conservation actions and involve the villagers and businesses in the decision-making for the island.
Youth Rapid Response Conservation Unit
The Habitat Foundation has sponsored the costs for 3 of the youth to be trained in Scuba diving and taught marine conservation skills and they will become the Rapid Response Conservation Unit for the islands. How amazing is that. These guys have been with us since the start in 2011 in the village, since they were 6-7 years old attending our eco clubs, see the images below. Now they are 17, legally able to work and they want to join us to help the islands. They will help to remove ghost nets, fix buoylines, conduct reef check surveys, and learn how to restore corals. The Habitat Foundation has very generously donated us money to train these guys up. THANK YOU
Marine Park Management Plan - Stakeholder Consultants
We are working with the Department of Fisheries, Reef Check Malaysia, and NOAA to host 2 years of stakeholder engagements. This means Naquiah, our PEEP manager, will lead discussions with the villagers, dive centres and resorts to discuss what they want to do and how they recommend managing and improving the marine park. This will all be collated and developed into a marine park management plan from the bottom up. This will be the first time when the on-ground stakeholders will be so involved with the management plan at the development stages.
These two new activities will be added to what we normally do for example,
1) Protecting a turtle nesting beach - 448 nests in 2020
2) Conducting reef and seagrass surveys
3) Weekly cleanups
4) EcoClub sessions with the kids with them directly involved with hands on marine science and direct conservation actions.
5) Conducting photo ID research for turtles and sharks around the islands.
6) Weekly awareness talks for tourists.
7) Pushing for better waste management on the islands through our #PlasticFreePerhentian Campaigns, precious plastic machines and our awareness map
We cant do this without more support to pay for the basics like rent, boat fees, food and a basic stipend for our teams.
Our amazing dedicated team took VOLUNTARY 6 months unpaid leave so Fuze Ecoteer could survive the monsoon season and have some money to get us started alongside some grants.

RM50 - one days food for the team
This will be used to buy raw materials to feed our team of Conservationists of 10 for one day. We buy our raw materials from the villagers of Perhentian and Kuala Besut so the money will go direct to the people.

RM60 - one days rental for our 3 field stations
This money will be used for the rent of our 3 field stations. The rent goes directly to one of the villagers of Perhentian.

RM100 - boat fees for 2 conservation scuba dives
We pay RM50 per head for a double dive to the village boatman. With RM100, a buddy pair can conduct two scuba dives to help monitor the reefs and seagrass of the Perhentian Islands.

RM200 - One months boat fees to protect nesting sea turtles.
Our turtle team need to take a boat from the village to the turtle nesting beach. RM200 is the budget we give the local boatman to take our team to the beach whom stay for 5/7 days per trip. This cost is essential for our conservation work and to protect the turtles of Perhentian.

With RM500 we will be able to conduct 4 beach cleanups at isolated locations which are often sea turtle nesting beaches.

Perhentian Project - Tax Exemption Receipts
Hi All
I hope you are all well. The Perhentian project is still going well and next week we will restart the in-water conservation skills training for the Anak Pulau. This includes ghost net removal, bouyline maintenance etc.
Additionally the turtle season is just coming down from its peak in July, all is well with over 150 nests saved from April to June.
