In the island of Zanzibar, orphaned children face a dire situation with limited access to essential care and support. The absence of a dedicated facility leaves them vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, and perpetuates the cycle of poverty. Without intervention, their potential to contribute positively to society remains untapped, perpetuating social challenges within the community.
Urgent action is needed to address the challenges faced by orphaned children. By establishing a small orphans' village, we have the opportunity to create a profound and lasting impact on their lives, the community, and society at large.
Ash-fat (7 years old) is an orphan girl from Makoba Street, Bumbwini, Zanzibar. She, like many other orphans in Zanzibar struggles to meet the basic needs, from shelter to clothing, from food to health care to mention a few. Ash-fat’s father passed away from stroke when she was just 2.5 years old, leaving her mother behind struggling to take care and raise five children alone.
Together, let us offer hope, opportunities, and a brighter future for these deserving children.
Acquisition of Land
The land for the village is already identified, hence, the AAF team will upon funding, immediately start acquisition process. This will involve conducting in-depth research for the land, negotiations, and legal processes to secure the land title and related permits.
Drilling of Borehole Water Well and Water Supply System
Feasibility studies and assessments to identify an appropriate location for drilling a borehole will be done at very early stage of the project. This will engage drilling experts from the AAF’s water wells team who will drill the borehole and install necessary equipment for water extraction and supply. The drilling of the borehole will take place at very early stages of the project so that it minimise cost of water during the whole project period.
Moreover, as part of the project, a tank tower for water supply will be constructed and install a 5000-litre tank to store and supply water all over the village, both for domestic and agricultural use. The team will lay out a water supply network with pipes connecting each house and the farmland for agricultural activities. Throughout these activities, the Project Lead will ensure proper maintenance and regular testing of the water well and supply system to ensure a consistent and safe water source.
Construction of 10 House Units
As architectural plans and design specifications for the construction of 10 house units to accommodate the orphan families have been established already (see Annex 1 below), hence the team after land paperwork and permits, will jump into construction of 10 house units for orphans’ village. The construction will involve skilled contractors and construction teams that has always delivered quality projects for the AAF from mosques to schools and from madrasas to orphan home builds to mention a few.
The construction team will be closely monitored by the AAF’s Managing Trustee in Zanzibar who is also the Project Lead in this case. The Project Lead will oversee the construction phase, ensuring adherence to quality standards and timelines. Also, the Project Lead will make sure that necessary infrastructure such as electricity connections and sanitation facilities are fully considered.
Preparation of Farmland for Sustainability
After the 10 units of houses are fully completed, the construction team will immediately start preparing the farmland so that when the new village is inhabited then villagers can straight away start doing the farming activities to ensure village’s sustainability. A 10,000sqm area is the minimal planned farmland to start with in this project, although if more land available and cost implications won’t be an obstacle, then the farmland size can be increased to give more room to villagers to run their farming projects.
