My name is Zakia Hamdani, and on behalf of Bridge of Hope, an interfaith organization dedicated to resettling refugee families in the Niagara Region, we are raising funds to support a remarkable family as they navigate the devastating aftermath of the recent fire at Castillo Shawarma.

While they are a resilient family, the sudden closure of their business has left them without their primary source of income, and the costs of reopening are not entirely covered by insurance. The owners of Castillo Shawarma were one of the first families we sponsored to resettle in Niagara. This fundraiser is a way for the community to come together and provide some much-needed support during this challenging time.

Eight years ago, this refugee family arrived in Canada, fleeing war and seeking a better life for their children. Not only did they find security and stability in Canada, but they also dedicated themselves to helping others—supporting newly arrived families and even sponsoring their own extended family, creating a new home in Canada. Through hard work, determination, and community support, they fulfilled their dream of opening Castillo Shawarma in Port Dalhousie, a beloved local spot known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and delicious Middle Eastern food.

But on September 12, things changed for the worse. A devastating act of arson forced Castillo Shawarma to close, leaving the family heartbroken and without their source of income. The shop not only supported the owner but also employed his extended family, who are now left struggling in the wake of this senseless act.

As a community that believes in love over hate and strength in unity, we now have the opportunity to rally together to help this family rebuild. Anyone who has visited Castillo Shawarma knows the kindness and hospitality that filled that space and now is our chance to give back. We hope to raise enough funds to help the family reopen their restaurant and recover from the losses they’ve endured. Let’s show that we stand together, stronger than ever, and help this incredible family get back on their feet.
