The war in Syria has been taking its toll on children for ten years – their lives forever marked by the conflict. Hundreds of thousands of children are now fighting to reclaim their futures. 

5 million Syrian children in need

Death and displacement are just two of the life-threatening challenges children in Syria face, UNICEF has reported. 

"A child dies every 10 hours as a result of the war," the organization said.

From 2014 through the end of 2019, 5,427 children were killed, UNICEF said.

UNICEF also estimated that over 5 million children are in need inside Syria and 2.5 million more in neighboring countries.

UNICEF also noted that all children in Syria under the age of nine have known nothing but war in their lifetime.

Displaced from their homes

More than 1,000,000 people - 60% of them children - have fled their homes in north-western Syria since December 2020 as a result of Airstrikes and shelling against civilians

Most of the recently displaced families are being forced to crowd together in tents in bad conditions because they do not have enough money to secure proper accommodation.

Many are fleeing in open trucks or by foot, often at night, in a desperate bid to escape detection. All this while night-time temperatures drop below zero
