This campaign will collect all funds raised by May 4, 2022 at 7:00 PM EDT

In September 2020, we raised funds for the first mosque in Harrogate. But today, we need a little more to renovate a historic building if permission is granted.

"Whoever builds a masjid (mosque) in which the Name of Allah is mentioned, Allah will build a house for him in Paradise." (Sahih) - Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

UPDATE #1 (04/03/2022): Planning permission has been approved! We have 28 days from now to raise the needed funds.

UPDATE #2 (30/03/2022): Campaign extended through Ramadan to raise purchase funds (£100k) and repair funds (£100k) as needed. Read updates on the Update tab for more information.

UPDATE #3 (04/04/2022): New building secured, but campaign continues to pay back temporary loans and raise repair funds. Read updates on the Update tab for more information.

UPDATE #4 (17/04/2022): The campaign continues to raise repair funds. Watch the short video below to see the restoration work that needs to be done.

Help us secure a mosque and community hub in Harrogate

Assalamu aleikum once again from Harrogate in beautiful North Yorkshire in the United Kingdom.

Back in September 2020, after raising funds for over 10 years, Harrogate’s small Muslim community came to LaunchGood to top up funds to purchase a building for our first mosque. Alhamdulillah, that campaign was successful, raising over £100,000 in less than two weeks.

You can read more about that campaign and watch a short video about the history of our community here

However, that purchase was ultimately unsuccessful due to planning issues that we could not resolve. Entrusted with funds to secure a building, we spent the next year searching for new options: greenfield sites, former church facilities, former manufacturing and retail buildings… even an old barn! Despite bidding on many properties and facing more complex planning issues, those attempts weren’t successful either. But we continued to build bridges with the council, other religious communities, and our neighbours - all of whom were very supportive.

Images from our failed attempts at securing land or property for a mosque and community centre

One step closer to our dream

Finally, in late 2021, a building we had previously bid on became available again. A derelict structure in the town centre, this building had been purchased by property developers who wanted to demolish it. However, the building has historic value to Harrogate, serving as its second hospital in the 1870s and later a Masonic Hall and Home Guards club. Most recently it was used as a snooker hall before closing close to 10 years ago.

The finished property, located near ample parking, will, inshallah, easily accommodate our prayer and community needs while retaining the architecture and finishes of the listed building as desired by the council. We are determining what is needed to ensure that the structure is sound and watertight.

Because there was limited potential for residential or commercial use, we were able to put a deposit on the property subject to planning permission. This process started and was finally made public in late December 2021.

Winning community support

As with all proposed development, a public consultation began and soon we were inundated with online vitriol and objections filed with the council. We knew we had to move fast, starting with campaigns on social media telling our story and reassuring the wider community about planning concerns (parking, noise, and security). Positive news coverage followed helping us win over public opinion.

Furthermore, we stressed that we were going to restore the building with sensitivity, acknowledging its history, and keeping it open to the public as a community hub. We offered parking solutions and emphasised the use of walking or public transport to the facility. The Harrogate Civic Society, among others, lent their support and we soon found supportive comments to the council outnumbering opposition, alhamdulillah.

The beginning of our social media campaigning

Here's what we need now

The public consultation ends February 6th and we expect the council to make their decision in the weeks following. If permission is granted to use the building, we will need to complete the purchase shortly afterwards. At the moment, we have £380,000 of the £500,000 purchase price. To secure the building alone, we'll need £135,000 and we will need to raise this amount by the end of February, inshallah. That would at least ensure the building is in our hands.

But for our overall intentions to begin using the building, we'll need the following:

Purchasing the building + fees + legalEmergency repairsMinimal works for daily use
£135,000£50,000£15,000

We are grateful to the people of Harrogate for standing by us and pushing back against opposition. And we are committed to restoring the building and honouring its historic legacy. But all this effort will fail if we don't take the final step of raising the final purchase funds. Please donate generously so that we can create a facility that the entire city can be proud of, looked after by a Muslim community that aims to be a model for peace, collaboration, and civic pride. In the UK, your donations are GiftAid eligible, meaning that we can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give. It will not cost you any extra.

Because of the nature of this building and our need to restore it carefully, we will have to raise additional money (we estimate up to £400k) on an ongoing basis as we investigate the building further. However, with your help, we are confident that we can do so in a sustainable way, inshallah.

Stay tuned to this page and our social media feeds (Twitter: @harrogateIA, Facebook: @harrogatemuslims) for updates, including pledges of support, video and pictures.

Jazakullah khair.

Our next phase of renovation begins

Assalamu aleikum! After several months of planning and additional fundraising, we’re pleased to announce that, inshallah, our next phase of renovation on the building at 4 Belford Road is due to begin in July 2023, continuing for approximately 12-15 weeks.

Here’s what we have planned:

Before we got to this point, we made sure that emergency repairs to the roof were complete and that all necessary surveys were taken of the building, including checks for rot and asbestos. It’s difficult to convey how deteriorated the building interior is, but we’re determined to make it right.

This phase of renovation will focus on stripping the interior and commencing with structural works. We’ve worked with our builder to ensure that this can take place within the confines of the property. This means no disruption of traffic on Belford Road or Tower Street.

We’re also working closely with North Yorkshire council to make sure all works are conducted according to established building regulations and in a way to cause minimal disruption to our neighbours. There will be no scaffolding or other exterior works during this phase.

This phase will see a removal and replacement of both the ground and first floors, each of which have suffered extensive rot and degradation. The floors will be replaced with steel framing and timber infrastructure to match the existing levels. The steel infrastructure will also help brace the existing masonry walls.

The purpose of this phase will be to ensure the building is structurally sound and safe for its intended use. We will need to raise additional funds to proceed with our final phase, which will involve installation of electrical, heating, security, and plumbing systems, along with interior walls, doors, and amenities. We may reach out with another Launchgood campaign when the final phase begins.

Our intent is for this process to be a model that other communities can follow in terms of outreach, management, safety, and engagement with the wider community. Thank you for contributing to this effort!

Until we can open our doors to everyone, our digital inboxes are open either on our social media (Twitter: @harrogateIA, Facebook: @harrogatemuslims) messaging us here or emailing us at info@harrogatemuslims.org.

Construction update

Jazakullahkhair for helping us reach our funding target to purchase a building for our first mosque. It was a historic opportunity for us and we are grateful to all who donated funds for this cause.

Now, we need to raise additional funds for emergency repairs to the roof, floors, and walls. Watch this short video to see what needs to be done, inshallah.

Our next target is £200,000 to ensure the building is safe and usable for our basic needs. Inshallah, after that we can raise further funds for additional improvements as our community grows.

You can donate this Ramadan at www.launchgood.com/harrogate, by bank transfer (Acct. 42942160, SC 30-93-91) or visit us at www.harrogatemuslims.org.

First stage achieved!

We have the keys!

Alhamdulillah, we have been able to secure the property on Friday April 1st, just before the start of Ramadan. We were able to do this based on your generous contributions and a last minute loan (interest free) from a local community member to cover the shortfall. Therefore, we'll still need your contributions to pay this loan back and will be collecting until the end of Ramadan, inshallah.

After we pay back the loan, we'll still be collecting for emergency repairs, so we appreciate you spreading the word. But we have at least secured the property and are grateful to all who supported us. This has been a 12 year journey, raising money in small amounts and making offers on properties over the years. We are so proud of our growing and loyal community and hope to establish the vision of an inclusive and welcoming facility that the city of Harrogate can be proud of.

More updates soon, inshallah.

Ramadan fundraising

Assalamu aleikum everyone! Here's an update on our current fund-raising status:

  • We have had some success in accepting pledges from community members and others dependent upon planning permission. These have helped us move closer to our goal, even though the current tally shows us behind our goal. We will try to include these contributions in the total shown on Launchgood.

Of the £200,000 goal, about half of it (£100k) is required to meet our obligations to purchase the building. We need to have this full amount by early April and are making arrangements for temporary (interest-free) loans from community members in case we come up short. But we would still like to raise these funds as soon as possible to repay these loans.

The other half (£100k) is needed for emergency repairs and minor modifications to the building interior. We will take what we can get for the duration of the crowdfunding campaign and are also seeking in-kind support for these repairs (builders, materials, etc.)

To meet these goals, we are extending the campaign through the month of Ramadan so we can provide the opportunity for others to give during this holy month (to April 30th).

Thank you again for your support and please do feel free to share our campaign with anyone you think might be interested in supporting us!

Permission GRANTED!

Assalamu aleikum everyone! Alhamduliillah, we are very pleased to announce that our planning application has been accepted. This is the result of years of hard work and we are grateful to everyone in the community who helped on the application and spread the word. Please thank your non-Muslim friends and neighbours who supported us… this made a big impact!

Our next step is to raise the balance of funds necessary for us to purchase the property outright. Although we have raised most of what we need, we had a number of pledges that were dependent upon planning permission being granted. So for the next 30 days, we will be collecting these pledges through the campaign here at Launchgood. Please share with your wider community networks.

This is just the first part of a long process. Once the building is purchased, we will need to make immediate repairs to prevent further damage to the building and then assess the renovation needs and further expenses. Our priority is to make the building useable enough for daily and/or Friday prayers. This may take some time, so please be patient with us.

Jazakallahkhair for all your support!

Campaign update

Assalamu aleikum. We wanted to let everyone know that this crowdfunding campaign has been set up in preparation to be publicised once planning permission has been granted. We have received many pledges of support once that moment occurs, inshallah. We are still hopeful that moment will come soon.

Once permission is granted, we will have 30 days to raise the necessary funds. Inshallah, when that occurs, we will revise the end date of this campaign accordingly and begin our direct outreach. If you have contributed so far, jazakallah khair. We appreciate your early support.
