My name is Dima. My family and I are trying to escape Gaza to Canada because of the war. A few friends of mine in Canada created this to help with funding.

Positive News Update (March 15, 2024):

Great news - Dima and her family have made it to Egypt! This temporary solution does not mean permanent safety, but it is a huge step, and we want to thank each and every one of you who has had a hand in helping them escape the dire situation in Gaza.

Of course, we're not done. Dima and her family deserve security and peace, and as per our original intent, we want to support them in finding it. Four of her family remain behind in Gaza, and we are working to raise the money to get them out as soon as possible. We took out a personal loan to cover the cost of the family's passage, and there are other costs still coming - accommodation, flights, and much more.

Please continue to help as much as you can! Whether you donate, share, or pray for this wonderful family, every bit of support is appreciated. We will continue to keep you all updated. Thank you again!

Sincerely,

Dima's students and friends

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We need your help to get out of this warzone. Since October 7th, my family and I have left our home and travelled across Gaza to escape the violence that follows us. It is our sad realisation that we cannot currently be safe here and we are being forced to find a way out against our wishes.

Fortunately we have a group of friends and supporters in Canada, so we are going to apply for a Temporary Residence Permit and stay with them. They have been working to estimate the costs associated with the application itself and with the cost of our stay. This amount is designed to get us there and support us so that we can finally feel safe.

About Our Family

Before the Nakba, our family lived in Yaffa. For three generations we have been living in Gaza in refugee camps and have made a decent life for ourselves there. Many of us have graduated university and have good careers which we have now lost. One of our family had only just started her course at university, only to see it razed to the ground just a couple of months later.

We are a family of 17 of three generations. Our youngest members are twin four-year-olds, and we would all like to be able to sleep easily at night knowing they are safe. We all intend to go together no matter what, as family is deeply important and we know we would not feel safe at all if any of us were left behind.

About the Situation

It is not easy for us to leave. With the help of our friends in Canada, we have hope for a future that does not involve staying together in a small room or tent. We know that getting out of Gaza today is difficult so we will need all the support we can get.

If you can donate funds, we would appreciate every cent. If you can talk to your MPs to get them to support greater measures to save Palestinian lives and futures, please do so as there are many others like us who are in need of help. Any support is greatly appreciated.

Cost breakdown

- travel expenses in Cairo, Egypt for completing the paperwork needed to leave for Canada: 4200CAD x17 = 71,400CAD

- flight tickets to Canada: 800CAD x17 = 13,600CAD

- living costs in Canada: 15,000 x17 = 255,000CAD

Urgent appeal regarding Dima and her family

Dear donors, signatories and all supporters of Dima and her family,

This is Siyi, a friend of Dima who is running this campaign with other students and friends of Dima. I’d like to give you a quick update regarding Dima and her family’s situation:

The IDF have announced a ground invasion in Rafah, which will commence in 2 weeks. This is in addition to the ongoing bombing that has been happening in the last couple of days. You may have been aware of this already: Dima and her family are in Rafah right now, and they have nowhere else to evacuate to. Designated safe corridors have been attacked before. In addition, UNRWA’s funding is also getting cut and the organization will lose capacity in late February to early March. This means Dima’s dad, who is a UNRWA lab technician, is about to lose the only source of income for the family. Dima and her family are in fear that the worst might happen soon. However, we’re all doing our best, trying to remain hopeful, and not giving up just yet, despite the humanitarian disaster that’s unfolding as you’re reading this message.

We are requesting your permission to use the current fundraised amount to pay for the passage fees to Rafah border crossing. We were quoted 5000 USD per person by a travel agency endorsed by the border crossing office. For Dima’s family of 17 people, we will need 85000 USD in total. Dima and her family would like to give this option a try. It saddens me to say this but we are putting everything on the line here to try to get them out through Rafah, as soon as possible.

All of the above means that the donations that have been collected and are still stored in the LaunchGood account right now will have to be used for the passage fees. And passage fees are not refundable. With this piece of information, if you’d like to request a refund, please do so before this Tuesday midnight, February 12th, EST.

Last but not least, we urge you to share the fundraiser link with supportive family and friends, and please contribute more if you can. We are getting desperate as the situation is becoming more horrifying by the day in Gaza.

Thank you for your help and support as always. Please keep Dima and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Siyi Fan

Every single share makes a huge difference in this desperate situation.

Hopefully with continued support, we'll have a happy update to give at some point in the future.
