Our Initiative:

Project Downtown Tampa is a branch of a national homeless advocacy organization dedicated to providing food, water, and basic necessities to the community in downtown Tampa every Friday without fail. Our funding has been severely depleted due to the effects of COVID-19 but our mission, even within these circumstances, continues to be to serve our local community. In order to continue to implement our mission, we need the collective force of our local community as well as ones outside of Tampa to sustain and bring about the next level of homeless advocacy.

What We Do ​

PDT has grown immensely since its inception, from a group of five or six Muslims putting together sandwiches in Salem’s Gyros, a Muslim-owned franchise, to a multi-faith, multi-ethnic volunteer base with at least twenty-five volunteers coming downtown every Friday. PDT remains true to the same Islamic principle of charity by providing necessities to those most in need, and by doing so has made itself a well-known pillar of charity and compassion both in the Muslim community and the Tampa community as a whole.

PDT currently reaches over 150 individuals at four separate locations with sandwiches, water and other necessities such as bus passes and feminine care products every week. PDT also provides semi-annual hygiene kits with 10-15 hygiene products included; such as soap, socks, toothpaste/toothbrushes, bug spray, etc. 

Our hope is to extend beyond the necessity and provide sustainable long-term benefit to the community being served by kick-starting initiatives such as a job fair and medical outreach programs. These ambitious goals cannot be achieved without the generosity from the extended community at large.

PDT is an organization that solely relies on donations and each year we hope to grow in our number of locations being served as well as the average number of individuals reached each week.
