YEMEN FISHING PROJECT:
Implementation of a new workshop in Aden, Yemen.
Following my visit to Yemen in Dec 2024 and witnessing the level of poverty and desperation, I have made a commitment to raise £30,000 to provide a workshop for the fishing community of Aden, Yemen that will provide a source of livelihood and income to 1200 fishermen and benefit 8,400 individuals.
For nine years the war in Yemen has trapped families in a brutal cycle of starvation and sickness. Tens of thousands have been killed and 4.5 million displaced. The United Nations have warned that food scarcity in Yemen could lead to the worst famine in 100 years, with 20 million civilians at risk of extreme hunger unless they receive urgent humanitarian aid. Every 10 minutes, a child dies from malnutrition and other preventable diseases.
The fishing community, a cornerstone of Yemen's economy, faces immense challenges from damaged infrastructure and outdated equipment, which hinder effective operations and result in reduced catches and income.
To address these pressing issues, Action for Humanity has conducted a needs assessment in the Al-Buraiqa and Qom Districts of Aden governorate, identifying the specific needs of local fishermen through multiple focus group discussions with fishermen and local committees.
AFH is looking to establish and enhance a community-led workshop dedicated to the maintenance of fishing boats, supplying essential materials and tools necessary for optimal operation of fishermen boats. This project urgently needs your support to help Yemen’s fishing communities, whose livelihoods are essential to the nation’s economy and food security.
The project is designed to respond to the most critical needs of fishermen striving to secure stable livelihoods and improve food availability while preparing communities for future challenges. AFH approach efforts to build resilience, create sustainable employment opportunities and enhance food security in one of the most severely affected areas in Yemen.
This facility will serve approximately 1,200 fishermen and their families in the targeted coastal communities in Aden. Each fisherman supports an average of seven family members, meaning the initiative could positively impact around 8,400 individuals. An expected daily attendance of 15-20 fishermen seeking to maintain their boats and improve operational efficiency.
This project will provide stable livelihoods, improve food access, and strengthen community resilience, directly addressing poverty and food insecurity in one of Yemen’s most vulnerable areas. Your funding will have a lasting impact on the lives of these families and the future of their community.
