Jummah Bus Fundraiser: A Journey Beyond Classrooms

WHY: It's your Sadaqah Jariyah to help generations to come attend weekly Jummah prayers (Elementary) in addition to other Educational Institutes (Entire School Community) to support the students' spiritual and intellectual growth.

Introduction

In the heart of our Aya Montessori community, a beautiful tradition has taken root. Our beloved students have been embarking on journeys of spiritual growth. Every Friday last year, they ride together in a staff member's car, as they make their way to the mosque. It has been a cherished part of their Montessori experience. 

Our Growing Community Needs a Bus:

However, as our community continues to grow, so do our needs. Our children's thirst for knowledge extends beyond the walls of our classrooms. We believe that learning is not confined to textbooks and lectures but thrives through experiential education. That's why we have weekly and monthly going-outs for our Elementary students, with Jummah Prayer being the highlight of the week for them.

These outings are an integral part of our educational philosophy. They offer real-life lessons, fostering connections between theory and practice. Whether it's a visit to a museum, a nature hike, or a cultural exploration, these adventures ignite curiosity, inspire creativity, and deepen our students' understanding of the world around them.

The Challenge:

Yet, there's a challenge we face: the lack of a dedicated bus for our outings. Currently, we rely on staff cars or renting buses, which can cost up to $500 per trip in Maryland. These expenses add up quickly and limit the number of enriching experiences we can provide for our students.

We were able to reserve a brand new 15-passenger Ford Transit 350 bus for the cost of $65K. 

Empowering Our Students:

Upper Elementary students have taken it upon themselves to address this challenge head-on. They are embarking on a journey of entrepreneurship and financial literacy by spearheading this fundraiser for their very own Jummah Bus.

Through this initiative, they are learning valuable lessons about budgeting, fundraising, teamwork, and community engagement. They are witnessing firsthand how their efforts can have a profound impact on their own educational experiences and the broader Aya Montessori community.

About Aya Montessori

Aya Montessori’s Mission is to nurture the mind, body, and soul of future generations and protect their innate nature (Fitrah-فطرة) through spiritual, social, and intellectual growth grounded in traditional Islamic Education and authentic Montessori education.

AYA was founded by a group of parents, educators, and artists inspired by the potential to create an authentic Montessori learning community for their children. In 2014, its founding team including AMI Montessori-trained guides formed the school and established its unique spiritual identity along with a grounded and creative curriculum for its supplemental programs. Aya holds many meanings in different languages: model, miracle, colorful, beautiful, and to fly.

In 2016, we opened our first classroom at a humble location in Elkridge, MD with a capacity of 40 children. 5 years later, we ventured into a new journey during the scariest time our generation has witnessed. The Aya Founding team found a new home for the community that supports the health and holistic well-being of our children and educators. In 2021, an entire building was transformed inside out and prepared just in time for 120 new children starting a new academic year. This building was designed with purpose and thoughtfulness as a Montessori School. Now, Aya’s community is reaching nearly 200 students and 35 educators between ages 2-12 all under one roof.
