Fighting for survival every day

It’s hard enough living in a refugee camp; every day you navigate danger, disease and difficulty. Imagine tackling these impossible odds as a child - worse still, facing these dangers as an orphan or a disabled person. Children have rights and needs that cannot be fulfilled in the harsh environment of the refugee camps. Orphans are in great danger from starvation, exploitation and disease.

Even children with families can't always be fed and clothed due to the extreme hardship and poverty. Disabled children are vulnerable, voiceless and

have no-one to advocate for their needs.

The Eritrean refugees have no reserves, no energy or resources. They cannot ‘lock down’ to stay safe from Covid-19 and other dangers. They cannot protect their children like we can.They survive only day-to-day, and many children die before their time.Tomorrow is too late for them.

What your donation provides

Ethar Relief runs programmes in East Sudan designed to support Eritrean refugee children and the networks of support around them.

Your donations provide:

• Food packs, containing everything needed to keep a family with children nutritionally healthy for a month: including flour, sugar, lentils, dates, concentrated fruit powder, soup, mixed beans, and cooking oil.

• Clean water – essential not just for drinking but for hygiene too. Your support helps us to expand well provision and mobile distribution so that children don’t have to walk for hours or gather in large numbers for water.

• Orphan sponsorship. Death rates are high in the camps, and many children lose their parents. We match you with an orphan who needs support, and your sponsorship provides safe shelter, school education, clothing, food, medical care and more.

• Disabled child sponsorship, where you support a disabled child and the family trying to care for them with food packs, special education provision, medical care and essential equipment such as beds, crutches, ramps, toilets and wheelchairs. Ethar Relief was set up more than a decade ago by former refugees from Eritrea who were liberated from refugee camps in East Sudan. We want to end the suffering that we know exists in these places.
