The Canadian housing crisis, which began in the 1980s, is an ongoing issue that has worsened over the years. With the rising cost of living, homelessness has soared across Canada, with more and more people turned away from at-capacity shelters. 

What if you earn minimum wage or have welfare assistance?

Currently, the following are the average cost of rent for 1-bedroom units across Canada:

The financial struggle is a harsh reality for many, with an average monthly income of just $2,400 for those earning minimum wage across Canada. In stark contrast, the living wage stands at $4,066 (Source: Talent.com), leaving a significant portion of our population in a perpetual state of financial crisis. Aside from covering rent, they’re not able to pay bills and buy food and other essentials needed to sustain a healthy livelihood.

How does this impact Nisa Homes?

At Nisa Homes, we are seeing more and more clients staying longer than the average 3-month period because they can't afford basic necessities. This has led to our waitlists growing, with every month over a hundred women and children awaiting safe shelter, often in unsafe homes.

The #OvernightChallenge

On October 20, Nisa Homes will be hosting the #OvernightChallenge, in which, by spending the night in your car, you get a glimpse into what many experience when home is not a safe place. Nisa Homes has had too many women come after being forced to live in their cars, couch surf, or even spend the night at a Tim Hortons or a mosque (if they even let them!). You can participate with us in raising awareness about the struggle of homelessness, especially as it affects women and children and help us reach our goal of supporting them in finding safe shelter, giving them a chance to start over.

Nisa Homes is a not-for-profit charity that provides a safe haven and support services for women and children who are fleeing domestic violence, poverty or seeking asylum. They provide them with safe shelter and a wide range of services catered to their needs.  

At Nisa Homes, we envision a flourishing Muslim community in which help is available, shelter is accessible, and healing is possible.  

Nisa Homes was born out of a need to support the most vulnerable and marginalized members of our community. After conducting a feasibility study, we found that culture is vital to immigrant, refugee, and Muslim women. As such, we work hard to provide a place for women to live comfortably and feel safe in a supportive home environment, explore their cultural identity, and directly connect with their community. This helps us ensure their long-term success in restarting their lives and transitioning into independence after trauma or homelessness. This home is a center of empowerment where the vulnerable are given hope, the broken are rebuilt and the helpless are given their dignity.
