“We realize the importance of our voices only when we are silenced.”
―Malala Yousafzai
We believe in the voice and power of Muslim Girls. In a time when Muslim women are increasingly targeted for their religious beliefs and violent hate crimes against them are on a rise, the way we are (mis)represented in the media has a tremendous impact on our livelihoods.
Reclaiming our narrative in the media means eliminating the rampant stereotypes and misconceptions that have hijacked our identities. Muslim women and girls deserve to have their voices amplified as experts of their own experiences. Doing so not only empowers Muslim women and their autonomy on an individual level, but the change also ripples outward against hate, making it more difficult for others to speak on our behalf. We believe that the pen is mightier than the sword, and in the age of social media and the Internet, the keyboard trumps everything.
The Muslim Girl Foundation aims to encourage and support Muslim Girls as they embark on journeys to better themselves, their communities and the world. The goal of this campaign is to enrich, support, and celebrate marginalized Muslim Girls with scholarships and mentorship as they change the world. This is what a #MuslimGirlArmy really looks like.
"When I started blogging for MuslimGirl, I wanted to make videos and I still do. Eventually, I ended up writing editorials and I loved it because it sparked my love for writing. If it wasn't for MuslimGirl, I wouldn't have tapped into my talents. In fact, it got me into screenwriting. I would like to double major in Mathematics and Film and this scholarship would encourage me to take my academics and talents to new heights." ―Ahlam Abdelkader, 20
Muslim women of color bear the largest burden of Islamophobia.
Muslim women who wear hijab or niqab face heightened rates of violence against women as they are a visible and physical representation of Islam.
Now more than ever, we need the voices of Muslim women to be amplified as experts of their own experiences.
Recent Examples of Harassment and Violence Against Muslim Women:
June 19th: Van runs over 10 worshippers, killing one, near Finsbury Park Mosque.
June 18th: Nabra Hassenen, 17, abducted outside of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society Mosque and murdered by a 22 year old man.
June 16th: MuslimGirl founder illegally forced to remove hijab at French airport en route to serving as juror at the Cannes Film Festival. French ambassador to the United States questions the validity of her experience.
June 15th: Two Muslim women were in a car when a bag full of vomit was thrown at their car.
May 26th: Ricky John Best, 53, and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche, 23, killed and Micah David-Cole Fletcher, 21, seriously injured while trying to stop anti-Muslim rants against two women in Portland, one of whom was Muslim.
"Come August, I will complete a year of writing with MuslimGirl, and I honestly feel that in this time I have learned a lot about myself both as a writer and as a young Muslim woman. A scholarship opportunity would encourage me to become more present in the community so that I can better represent woke black muslim women and muslim women in general." ―Nihal Mubarak, 24
Education has the power to transform a life. Your support goes directly towards increasing Muslim women’s access to education — it not only provides financial assistance to outstanding students, but also allows generations of students to learn, grow, and achieve. Our goal is to raise $10,000 and award 10 scholarships.

“Writing for Muslim Girl challenges me to use my multiple privileges to SPEAK UP on behalf of my experiences and other stories that need to be heard for others to more fully understand the experiences of Muslims around the world. MG serves as a platform for Muslim women to communicate, collaborate, and confront negative rhetoric perpetuated against communities that are marginalized because of their faith, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or ability. As a proud Muslim-Iranian-American, MG has been a welcoming safe-space for me to strengthen my Shia identity, and welcomes all writers as they are.” ―Sepideah Mohsenian-Rahman, 27
"Through both my personal research and team discussions, Muslim Girl encourages me to seek answers to questions I have in order to acquire knowledge that may be used to teach others. If that's not the meaning of sisterhood, I don't know what is." ―Marwa Adina, 19
MuslimGirl.com was born in the bedroom of a teenage girl who was fed up with feeling voiceless in the media. She and her girlfriends made it an after-school hobby to write on the daily life and experiences of being an American Muslim teenager, in the hopes of connecting with other girls out there who felt the same way. They hoped to dispel stereotypes and build bridges through the spirit of sisterhood by just being themselves. Little did they know, MuslimGirl.com would grow with them as they came of age and literally chronicle the evolution of their identities as Muslim women. MuslimGirl.com has continued to grow and evolve with our generation. Today, MuslimGirl.com has become the most-read source for American Muslim women’s voices on issues pertinent to their lives — as it should be.
"Muslim Girl has empowered and amplified my voice and the voices of countless Muslim women to take ownership over our narrative and to demand truth and justice where it is underserved. Beyond Muslim Girl's incredible work in media, it is, first and foremost, a sisterhood, a space that uplifts and heals and inspires -- and in that Muslim Girl is unparalleled."―Halimah Elmariah, 21

“The classroom, with all its limitations, remains a location of possibility. In that field of possibility we have the opportunity to labor for freedom, to demand of ourselves and our comrades, an openness of mind and heart that allows us to face reality even as we collectively imagine ways to move beyond boundaries, to transgress. This is education as the practice of freedom.” ―Bell Hooks
