Mumineen Academy seeks your compassionate support in ensuring our newly established Islamic school can keep its doors open to the children and parents within this community that have come to depend on the invaluable education being provided by the school. 

Where are we coming from (our past)?

The academy started three decades ago with several Quran and Arabic programs such as: weekend Arabic classes, evening Islamic and Arabic classes, summer classes and full-time Hifdth/Quran Memorization programs. In our most recent iteration of the academy since 2011, these programs have jointly yielded more than 70 Huffaz who memorized the Quran, many of whom are active in Masjids across Houston and other cities in the US. These efforts were only possible through selfless services offered by active community volunteers.

Where are we today?

A few months ago, at the beginning of the 2023/2024 school year, our full-time Hifdth program transitioned into an Islamic school that provides a balanced system of western academic education in addition to Islamic and Quran education. Furthermore, the school facilitates club activities in STEM, public speaking, and languages such as Yoruba, among other electives. Despite the inclusion of a full line of academic classes in the school curriculum, the Hifdth program maintains its strength with 35% of our current students fully memorizing at least a Juz (or multiples of 2 up to 6 Juz) in the current school year alone and more on the way!

Particularly, the school has provided a sense of community and belonging to our students, who are mostly African American Muslims. Their parents have the peace of mind that their kids’ school environment cultivates a strong moral compass that protects them from the current cultural menaces found in both public schools and some Islamic schools, ensuring their growth in an environment where they are loved for being who they are.

The Challenge: Ensuring Sustainability

However, we are facing a crucial challenge in keeping the school running – securing operational funds and sustaining the salaries of our dedicated teaching faculty. We need an amount of $350,000 USD to keep school operational for the year. Due to this being the first year of operation, this cost is not fully covered by the school tuition.

Our future

The Pre-K to Grade 8 classes for the school are currently taking place in our Mumineen Community Hall, where the community is sacrificing regular daily programs to ensure the school can run successfully. Alhamdulillah, the community has secured a separate acreage of land where we plan to build a permanent school complex. Although we envisage a large complex in the future that will accommodate classes, a multipurpose hall/gym, labs, and world class boarding facilities, we are currently focused on construction of a building to house the classes. This is estimated to cost about $1,300,000 USD.

5. Virtues of Education: The importance of education in Islam is illustrated with the first ayah of the Quran that was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW), which was about education and knowledge. In the first revelation Allah SWT says, 

“Read. Read in the name of thy Lord who created; [He] created the human being from a blood clot. Read in the name of thy Lord who taught by the pen: [He] taught the human being what he did not know” (Quran, 96: 1-5). 

Likewise, it is narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Whoever takes a path upon which to obtain knowledge, Allah makes the path to Paradise easy for him.” — Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2646

Allah says in Surah Qasas Ayah 77 “…Do Good As Allah Has Done Good to You…” Likewise, Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “..And whoever helps ease a difficulty in the world, Allah will grant him ease from a difficulty in the world and in the Hereafter…" Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1930, Book 27.
