Muslims helping those affected by the Maui wildfires.

DONATE: Responding to the Devastation, Embracing Compassion

Donate to assist the victims of the Maui fires. On Tuesday August 8, 2023, a brush fire was reported in the central area of Maui. As Hurricane Dora passed through the south of the Hawaiian islands, severe winds had knocked down power lines. The death toll continues to rise and the damage to property is expansive. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated. The Muslims for Maui fundraising campaign is driven by the purpose of extending financial aid to the residents of Maui, United States, who have been profoundly affected by recent fires devastating their homes, communities and lands. Our primary goal is to raise direct aid that will provide immediate relief and support to those affected, addressing their urgent needs for shelter, sustenance and medical assistance. However, our purpose extends beyond immediate disaster relief and includes our aim to highlight the issues of environmental racism, indigenous rights, and racial justice that have come to the forefront in the wake of this disaster. We strive to foster understanding and solidarity among Muslim and indigenous communities through raising awareness and advocating for lasting change.

Islamic Teachings on Compassion, Charity, and Solidarity

Join Muslims for Maui to build bridges and promote Islamic teaching of being good neighbors in the truest sense by offering assistance during this period of sorrow and upheaval. Our shared humanity transcends all differences, and we are committed to helping those in need of assistance, regardless of their background. We must center the needs of Maui residents during this trying time, reaffirming our collective responsibility to support one another and work toward a more just and equitable future for all. In Islam, compassion and empathy towards those facing hardships are highly revered. The Quran teaches us: "The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills" (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:261). Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of helping those in need, saying, "The believer's shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity." (Tirmidhi)

Charity (sadaqah) is a means of cleansing one's soul, earning immense rewards, and promoting unity within the community. Our faith also teaches us to stand in solidarity with those facing hardships, irrespective of their background, race, or religion.

Uniting for Maui's Recovery: Join American Muslim Community Foundation and Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative (MuslimARC)

Recognizing the significance of these teachings,  the American Muslim Community Foundation has partnered with MuslimARC  to initiate the Muslims for Maui Fundraising Campaign. This campaign seeks to channel our compassion into action by providing immediate aid to the people of Maui.  Will you partner with us to make a difference?

Transforming Desperation into Hope

In times of crisis, our collective strength shines brightest when we come together as a community, embodying the principles of compassion and solidarity. As we extend our hands to help, we realize that every act of generosity, no matter its size, holds the potential to create a profound impact on the lives of those who are suffering. When you contribute to the Muslims for Maui fundraising campaign, your donations are not merely financial transactions—they are beacons of hope, carrying with them the promise of relief and renewal.

Uniting as a Compassionate Force

By contributing to this campaign, you become part of a compassionate force that transcends borders and backgrounds. The Islamic teachings of compassion, charity, and solidarity come alive through your actions, demonstrating the timeless truth that when we stand together, we can make a difference that resonates far beyond the immediate crisis.

West Maui had the island’s second-highest rate of households without a vehicle and the highest rate of non-English speakers.”
