Permanent Safe Homes for Women

Launched in 2015, Nisa Homes is the first group of transitional homes in Canada. Nisa Homes is for Muslim women and children who are fleeing domestic violence, those who are refugees, newcomers, or are experiencing homelessness. Our work has been featured in the Toronto Star, CBC Vancouver, CBC Windsor and The Link Canada. With your help, we can become a permanent and sustainable safe haven for Muslim women and children by purchasing our homes.

Purchasing our Homes Would Mean:

1. Avoid risk of being evicted. This would be extremely detrimental to our residents which would result in further trauma and homelessness. We've already had to move twice at two of our locations due to issues with size and location. This was not only expensive but took away time and resources intended for our residents.
   
2. Finding a house is easier. Many homeowners refuse to rent to Nisa Homes due to the liability of renting out to a transitional home. This drastically limits our choices and results in us sacrificing on the location, the size and quality of the house, and the amenities within.
3. Ability to customize the house to our needs, including but not limited to making the houses physically accessible, setting up high standard security systems and changing the layout to better suit the needs of our residents as well as staff.
4. We will become more sustainable. As owners, we expect our monthly expenses to decrease significantly, as landlords often increase their rent to accommodate us. Additionally, in the past when we've moved the home, we've been forced to rent more expensive properties due to the constant rise in rental prices, especially in the areas we need to be in (safe, family neighbourhoods in central locations).

Thanks to a successful Launchgood campaign last Ramadan, we were able to purchase our home in Windsor, ON and witnessed first hand these benefits. As a result, we have created this fund to help purchase our homes in Mississauga, ON and Surrey, BC. By utilizing halal financing, we hope to open a home in these two cities, with an ultimate goal of opening a home in every major Canadian city.

What is Nisa Homes?

1 in 5 women in Canada experience some form of abuse in an intimate relationship. The government provided shelters are often overcrowded and sometimes even unsafe, as a result many women end up staying with their abuser out of desperation. Born out of this need, Nisa Homes is the first and only transitional home (temporary shelter) for Muslim women and children in Canada. We currently operate three homes across Canada; in Mississauga, ON, Windsor, ON and Surrey, BC. We provide a safe place and assistance for at least three months as these women overcome trauma and homelessness. Our goal is to support and empower women to regain the confidence, means, and ability to lead a successful, independent and self-sufficient life.
