Assalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,
Have you ever lost a loved one? If you have, you will know a pain that is deep and lasting. You will ache to see them and long to hold them. The loss of a parent is even harder to bear. But death separates life and we are forced to be apart.
This pain is only temporary. Allah ﷻ knows our pain and He tells us of a beautiful reunion.
"Gardens of Eden. They shall enter there, as well as the righteous among their fathers, their spouses, and their offspring. Angels shall enter to them from every gate (with the salutation): 'Peace be with you because you persevered in patience! Now how excellent is the final home!'" (ar-Ra’d: 23–24)
Whilst that is something we look forward to, we still live in the now and feel the pain here and now.
What can we do to lessen the pain and help them?
My parents are no more. My father died when I was 7 years old and my mother just 4 months ago.
When they were alive, I could do things for them to put a smile on their faces. And doing so would make me happy. Now I cannot. I will never be able to repay my parents for what they did for me, but I still must make some effort. I can still do things that will bring a smile to their faces when they meet Allah ﷻ.
Duty to our parents does not end when they pass away rather it begins a new phase. In fact, birr (dutifulness) after their death may be truer and more sincere. This is because whilst they live our actions can be stained by expectations of praise, benefit or just showing-off.
A parent is in greater need of their children after death than when they were alive.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘When a person dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), knowledge that is benefited from, and a righteous child who prays for him.’ (Muslim)
So, we have an opportunity to add to their good deeds and take away from their sins.
A man asked the Prophet ﷺ: "My mother died suddenly and did not have chance to donate anything. Had she been able to do, I think that she would have given sadaqah. Would she or I get any rewards if I give sadaqah on her behalf?" He replied: "Yes! So, give sadaqah on her behalf." (Bukhari)
A man asked the Prophet ﷺ: ‘My father died and left behind property without making any will regarding it. Would he be relieved of the burden of his sins if I give sadaqa on his behalf? He ﷺ said: ‘Yes.’ (Muslim)
All praise to Allah ﷻ that He has given us the ability to still serve our parents. This is something positive and beneficial that we can do with our grief and will make a real difference in sha Allah.
Introducing ‘On Behalf of Parents’
So, this is my journey that I would like to share with you. A journey to serve our parents through small sustainable projects that are all close to my heart and causes that my parents supported in their lifetime.
Supporting widows and orphans, aiding the elderly and the poor, providing clean water, building masajid, healthcare (mental and physical), providing shelter for the homeless.
I want to be a force for good. To leave a legacy. To have my children to continue after me. I will give my time and energy to these projects and oversee them as they mature, bi ithnillah.
