For a year, children in Gaza with Phenylketonuria (PKU)* have been deprived of necessary low-protein food, resulting in concerning symptoms, including neurological problems. Your support is urgently needed.

In 2020, Rebuilding Alliance learned about two children with PKU in Gaza - Jehad and Jenna - who were struggling without the necessary diet. Since then, RA has been supporting these two children and 210 others by providing them with special food supplements, a low-protein diet, and coaching for mothers on nutritional needs. As a result, their condition stabilized.

Due to the war and displacement, we lost contact with PKU families in Gaza. With the help of a dedicated team of volunteers and our NGO partner, Ard El Insan, we have located 157 PKU families in Gaza. We conducted a comprehensive survey to understand their needs and health conditions. Many parents shared that their children are exhibiting troubling symptoms. For example, 18-year-old Siraj, a medical student, is nervous all the time and forgets things easily. Ten-year-old Jehad has frequent headaches, and some children are experiencing lightening of their hair color.

Rebuilding Alliance, under the guidance of a nutritionist named Dr. Muhammad, is providing weekly food baskets to PKU children in Gaza. Each basket contains a week's worth of fresh vegetables, fruits, and canned goods. In September, 134 children and their families received food baskets during the Polio Pause in the southern, central, and northern regions of the Gaza Strip. Families expressed gratitude and hope to continue receiving these food baskets.

Apart from a low-protein diet, children also need food supplements to stay healthy. Your support can make a real difference in the lives of these children, helping them live healthy lives for years to come.

* Phenylketonuria is a genetic condition that causes a buildup of phenylalanine levels in the body. If untreated, it can affect brain development and cause neurological problems, even seizures. A special diet and medical food supplements can help reduce symptoms and allow PKU patients to live a healthy life.

How did the Rebuilding Alliance learn to deliver food even when bombs were falling? 

What we've learned is not something that came easily. In 2014, as 1000 bombs were falling each day, thousands ran for their lives, taking refuge in U.N. schools. The family whom the late Rachel Corrie sought to protect in Gaza asked us to arrange food deliveries and cleaning supplies when we thought it near impossible. Store owners accepted a promissory note from Rebuilding Alliance and the Rachel Corrie Foundation. Volunteers joined in to pick up the food, bringing it to the 2000 people taking refuge in each of the  UN schools. Later we raised all the funds needed and paid back the store owners.
