For two years now, the coronavirus pandemic has ravaged Pakistan. A country already struggling against an expanding water crisis, now bears the added weight of people dying from starvation and hunger. 

As Ramadan approaches, the suffering of millions of rural Pakistanis who continue to lack access to clean water and healthcare is only projected to increase. This is the month where our fast is meant to remind us of the suffering of millions across the world. 

This is the month where Allah (SWT) has opened the doors of mercy to those who give from their wealth. This is the month where your actions can be a means of your Jannah.

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever feeds a person breaking his fast will earn the same reward as him, without anything being lessened from the reward of the fasting person". (Tirmidhi)

The Problem

Pakistan is suffering from one of the worst water crises in the world. Even major cities like Karachi and Lahore are struggling to provide access to clean and safe drinking water. However, the situation only worsens amongst rural communities that not only lack modern infrastructure (like water sanitation plants), but also suffer from insufficient healthcare systems. In those rural communities, families often choose between dying of thirst and drinking contaminated water. It’s not really a choice.

These families suffer against severe malnutrition, chronic diarrheal diseases, along with a multitude of other diseases. Children, more than any other demographic, are the most vulnerable to these health conditions as their immune systems are not developed enough to withstand polluted and bacteria- infected water that they are forced to drink.

Who is Paani?

Paani literally translates to water in the Urdu language, whose mission is rooted in a fundamental desire to mobilize our communities to leverage our resources to give back. We have dedicated our mission to producing both short and long-term solutions that ignite sustainable change against this water crisis. We have built water systems that serve as little as 50 people to systems that not only provide water to thousands but also electricity to local schools. We began as an idealistic student organization at the University of Michigan exhausted by the lack of transparency in the nonprofit world and now we have channeled that exhaustion to become a leading non-profit organization that operates at one of the highest levels of transparency possible. Every well that an individual has donated is followed by pictures and videos of the entire well-building process. Paani’s purpose has and always will be to provide for people in need, bridging the gap between those able to help with the ones who need it most.

Every cent or rupee donated goes directly to the communities in Pakistan, whether it be through building wells, distributing food packs, or compiling hygiene kits. Paani faces no operating costs and so far we have built over 6,000 wells across rural Sindh and KPK, a number that grows daily with your support. However, Paani does not exist to provide only temporary fixes; our goal is to also tackle the permanent adversity at hand. Aside from the wells being put in place, Paani is also leading projects through education, health, and waste management efforts. We have worked directly with provincial governments to provide disaster relief and played a leading role in food distribution during the peak of the pandemic. 

Our team strives to be transparent in every way possible, so you can rest assured that your donation will fund a valuable cause. We have several avenues in which we can use your support, whether it be donating a well on behalf of yourself or your family, donating for projects specifically geared towards our public health initiatives, or even something as small as buying Paani apparel and tweeting about us to your local community. Many families have donated multiple wells on behalf of deceased relatives, as sponsoring a well goes on to provide good deeds (sadaqah jariyah) to those passed.

The donation of a well includes the construction of the well, constant monitoring and testing of water samples for cleanliness and safety, and maintenance. Batches of sixteen wells get built at once with the price of one well averaging out to $200 USD. Paani currently accepts cards, checks, Paypal, Venmo, and Donorbox. Any and all donations are tax-deductible. 

Our story is one that we hope you can resonate with; a story of young children of immigrants compelled to leverage their resources to give back to the countries that raised their parents.
