The Pakistani Student Society in Collaboration with IRC to raise funds for the Orphan and Widows Empowerment Project in Pakistan

Orphan and Widows Empowerment Project Phase 2 (EWIN-II)

Summary of Project:

This intervention seeks to improve socio economic conditions of 4364 widowed families through livelihood support, healthcare, psychosocial support, education and building their capacity through social empowerment in Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Muzaffarabad. Under the previous EWIN project, IRP equipped guardian/mothers from sponsored orphan families with different vocational skills. IRP intends to build upon previous interventions through providing business grants to widows after graduating from vocational skills training. Furthermore, this project urges to improve the health status of widows and their families through developing linkages with healthcare service providers. Linkages will be built with free healthcare facilities in the project locale. In addition to this, 30 higher education scholarships will be provided to selected students from widowed families on merit base.

Pakistani Students Society (PSS) is a student-run organization at the University of Calgary that is committed to promoting awareness of diverse Pakistani traditions, fostering discussions regarding social issues, fundraising for charity, and positively impacting the community.

The Purpose of LG page:
As a club, we are always looking for a way to help our community. The recent rise in domestic abuse and sexual assault cases, such as those of Zainab and recently Noor Mukadam, had impacted us hard as a community. The general lack of importance of women’s rights demonstrated by these cases becoming increasingly common made us want to find a way to support women back home, and that is when we were told about the Empowering Women In Need (EWIN) project. The project’s goal of teaching vocational skills to women and providing scholarships to students from widowed families aligned with how we wanted to help our mothers and sisters back home.
