Pakistan’s Crisis Unfolds: The Need For Immediate Support

Pakistan is home to some of the worlds most vulnerable people. As the fifth-largest population it is a nation in which millions of people are suffering from constant crisis, instability & extreme poverty.

As it stands an estimated 55 million people across Pakistan live below the national poverty line & nearly half of these individuals are experiencing extreme poverty.

A further 9 million people of the region are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance right now.

Hundreds of thousands lack access to food, clean water as well as quality healthcare. In addition, they face other challenges such as lack of education & employment opportunities.

Running On Empty: The Struggle For Water In Pakistan

Aside from food insecurity, access to clean water is a major challenge in some parts of the country. Pakistan is currently facing the worst drought in decades.

As a direct result families are unable to access water in order to stay healthy, grow crops, feed their livestock, & earn a sustainable living.

As a last resort many will walk miles each day on an empty stomach in search of water.

Without access to safe drinking water & sanitation, those most vulnerable are at risk of serious health problems, including typhoid fever, cholera, hepatitis A and E, dysentery, & gastrointestinal illnesses.

In addition to physical health issues, these conditions also lead to long-term economic hardship as poverty struck families are unable to pay for medical treatments.

Disaster Strikes: Pakistan Hit By Devastating Floods

In Pakistan ,natural hazards are all too frequent & a regular occurrence which adds to the country’s critical need for emergency support.

Recently severe flash floods caused catastrophic damage across the country leaving one-third of the entire country submerged in water.

More than 1100+ people including women & children lost their lives. A further 1500+ people were injured with millions more across the region displaced.

It is estimated that at least 33 million people have been impacted as a direct result of the floods in Pakistan. Approximately 220,000 homes have been wiped out & nearly 1 million homes have sustained damage.

The devastation caused to those already in need of aid is disastrous with loss to lives, homes, livelihoods, livestock & crops.

As a result, millions are now in crisis experiencing horrific conditions with no food, water or shelter.

Food Insecurity In Pakistan: Millions At Risk

Most recent estimates suggest that over 40 million people – more than a quarter of the population of Pakistan – are exposed to chronic hunger & malnutrition, making it one of the highest rates in Asia.

For those suffering from major food insecurity, access to a regular source of food is a real struggle.

They feel hopeless & do not know where their next meal will come from & proceed to starve, often for days on end.

With little to no means in order to make ends meet, families & children dependent on food aid for their survival are at breaking point.

Without a reliable food source they are extremely vulnerable to ill health, malnutrition, disease & in severe cases death.

On The Edge: Pakistan’s Children Struggle To Survive

The long-term effect of poverty on children in Pakistan is devastating, with almost half of all children under the age of five being underweight due to malnutrition.

As a result of the suffering they are unable learn, grow & stay healthy.

The lack of resources available also hinders future prospects as families are unable to afford basic healthcare as well as an education for their children.

As it stands there are approximately 22.8 million children aged 5-16 who are out of school in Pakistan. This is the second highest number of out of school children in the world.

Without immediate support they will continue to suffer & remain trapped in endless poverty.

Beyond The Virus: The Lasting Impact On Pakistan

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe lasting impact on those already suffering from crisis & instability across Pakistan.

The economic downturn caused by the pandemic has pushed millions deeper in to poverty making their already difficult living conditions even worse.

This crisis has increased the humanitarian needs of hundreds of thousands. They now face additional threats to their survival & are in desperate need of aid.
