The SHAMS Free Clinic first opened in 2018, and since moving into the West Philadelphia neighborhood in 2022 we have expanded to new horizons. In 2023 we have treated over 300 individuals through 550+ medical appointments at the clinic. We also served over 200 people at community health fairs throughout the city. This impact is a massive jump from just one year ago, more than doubling our patient volume. We are thrilled to continue to expand to serve more people each month.

With this increase in volume, however, we are incurring increased costs for lab tests, which are essential for medical diagnoses. At SHAMS Clinic we never charge our patients a penny in a commitment to providing low-barrier healthcare to those who need it most. Beyond offering free doctor visits, we also cover the bill for our patients' lab work. As more patients come in for blood tests, the clinic's bill from the lab is going up. That's why they are asking for your help to continue providing free, lifesaving healthcare to underserved communities in West Philadelphia

According to the CDC, 70% of today’s medical decisions depend on laboratory test results, and 40,000–80,000 deaths occur annually from preventable diagnostic errors across the United States. This is why SHAMS Free Clinic insists on patients receiving free lab tests to ensure there are no financial barriers to being diagnosed and treated.

Our Story

The Social Health and Medical Services (SHAMS) Clinic opened its doors in February 2018.  To date, the clinic has supported over 3,000 clients. We provide primary care and social services in an integrated, patient-centered manner, no matter of background, race, religion. Many of our patients are immigrants ineligible for government insurance, don't have ID, or simply struggle to navigate the healthcare landscape. We see them all for FREE with no hoops to jump through. Beyond free healthcare our volunteer staff make every effort to ensure that all patients needs are met, employing compassion and kindness to everyone we encounter.

ICNA Relief’s SHAMS Clinic is a nonprofit organization that endeavors to improve the health and social well-being of underserved communities in Philadelphia as rooted in the charitable principles of the Islamic faith. We envision a community in which individuals and institutions support each other to alleviate the effects of socioeconomic disadvantages on the health and social well-being of the underserved in Philadelphia.
