Energize. Inspire. Build.

On May 2nd, we (Arwa and Farah) launched a project that has been cooking in Arwa's kitchen for a long time. Qaylulah is a digital zine meant to provide our community in Columbia, MO with a local platform to discuss topics and issues surrounding Muslim life. It is for the deep thinker, the fashionista, the fitness follower, the spiritual investor, the artist, the health professional, and every individual in between. We need YOU to help make our vision for this project a reality by donating, subscribing to receive printed copies of our issues, and of course submitting to our second issue!

A local platform to foster intra-community discussions

Qaylulah is a short power nap taken in the afternoon. A “qaylulah” is a practice of the Prophet ﷺ. Like this great practice, this zine is meant to give you, the reader, the contributor, the participant, a boost of energy by providing you with a deep thoughtful piece on an intra-community issue, a stunning sketch, or a short fact about Islam in a spiritual reflection. It is a route to empowerment for you by providing a space to share your thoughts, reflections, and concerns. For readers, it can provide a mind opening opinion or editorial and new ideas for your wardrobe.  Qaylulah can be a space to find the next fitness routine for your lifestyle and a space to get to know a new community member through a featured in-depth article.

Looking beyond Columbia - help take our website to the next level

While we are starting in our own Muslim community in Columbia, Missouri, the scope of our vision is much wider. We hope to see this project blossom and provide a space for every community to have a local platform for intra-community discussions, to showcase talent, and build a stronger community bond through celebrating our vast diversity and actively engaging in our culture(s). We want to see this project go big but remain local, and it is up to you, our reader, to help us make this vision a reality.

For starters, we'll need our own domain, so we can start directing people to qaylulah.com. We want to be able to do more with our website and make your experience reading and interacting with our digital platform enjoyable as a reader and participant. To do this we need funds! That's where you come in. Any amount is helpful, but you also have the option to receive printed copies of our issues, and even a 1 year subscription!

Who We Are

Arwa and Farah are two friends who, at the beginning of 2016, had big dreams, ideas, and a lot of time on our hands. We both grew up in Columbia, MO and love this community to death (we're also as dramatic and cheesy as our metaphors) and want to do all we can to continue to build it up and make growing up in it an even more fulfilling experience than it was for us. Qaylulah is just one facet of this. Interestingly, according to Facebook, we do not have any pictures together, so here's a picture of Farah's hand after being hennaed by Arwa.
