We will be hosting free iftars to support our Muslim students on campus and the general USC & South Central Community

Help support our Muslim student community during Ramadan 2025!

Assalamu alaikum and break fast with us this Ramadan! The University of Southern California’s Muslim Student Union aims to host thirteen free iftar dinners to USC Muslims and the general community. Last year, we hosted fourteen free iftars for +160 Muslims per iftar. With your help we will be able to support the ever-growing community as observed through recent expanding student engagement.

Our goals include:

1. Provide free iftars: The MSU will be feeding approximately 160+ students (~$2000) for each iftar. The fund will cover 12 free iftars at UPC and 4 free iftars at HSC, and the food will be catered from local halal vendors in Los Angeles. Each iftar's catering is approximately $2000 at $12 per head before taxes. We will also include costs for beverages, plates, utensils, dates and campus venue reservations.
2. Bridging the gap between the local and university community: In addition to providing food, we hope to pool in people from all over southern California to fill in the spaces next to our students as they pray Maghrib and break their fasts. This includes people from the community in the greater LA area, the families of MSU members, and our guests from UCLA's MSA.
3. Supporting local Muslim businesses: By catering from local halal restaurants, we ensure for ourselves a steady supply of tasty food that while strengthening LA's Muslim community connections.

About the USC MSU Community

The Muslim Student Union (MSU) at USC is a vibrant community dedicated to fostering a welcoming environment for Muslim students on campus. We hope to offer sanctuary to brothers and sisters where faith can be practiced with unshakable confidence. With your help, we can help build a lively community where every Muslim student feels valued and empowered. As the community grows rapidly, so does the challenge of meeting its demands.

Some of our Events:

In addition to weekly halaqas lead by Sheikh Jibreel Speight and Tajweed classes, the MSU in the last year alone has:

• Hosted multiple smaller scale events such as Dawah Training led by Ustad Shahab Hassan, Fatihah Tafsir, Arabic classes, Fajr and Philz, bonfires at Dockweiler Beach, and an Islamic personal finance course led by Sheikh Furhan Zubairi from the Institute of Knowledge.
• Fundraised $8,500 for humanitarian efforts in Palestine, Morocco, Libya, and Afghanistan.
• Hosted two blood drives with the American Red Cross bringing in 50 donors.
• Hosted two retreats to Joshua Tree and Big Bear Lake, where over 100 students participated in spiritual reflection, hikes and bonding activities.
• Hosted large scale events including an end-of-semester dinner and banquet for up to 200 students.

Any money not used to host these iftars will go toward providing continued access to educational, spiritual, and social programming.*

It was narrated that Zayd ibn Khaalid al-Juhani said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever gives iftar to one who is fasting will have a reward like his, without that detracting from the reward of the fasting person in the slightest.”
