The Syrian Refugees in Jordan Need our Help!

From November 4-12 I will be taking part in Islamic Relief Canada's Jordan Trek Challenge⛰ and witnessing their work on the ground that is supporting the Syrian Refugees in Jordan.

Jordan is estimated to host 672,000 Syrian refugees who sought asylum due to the ongoing civil war.  Almost 90% of Syrian refugees in Jordan are either already hungry or teetering on the edge of food insecurity and 86 % of Syrian refugees living outside camps in Jordan live below the poverty line. 

The vast majority of these refugees live in cities and towns instead of camps, which means they must find a way to pay for things like rent and transportation. However, only a limited number of them have work permits, so most of these families still rely on humanitarian assistance to meet their most basic needs.

This influx of refugees has increased the competition in the labor market, causing a decrease in wages and an increase in poverty. The poor living conditions and lack of income generation opportunities has led to an increase in negative coping strategies including child labor, children being pulled out of school to beg, early marriages, and reduced food intake. 

As a result of the refugee crisis, resources are stretched to a breaking point. Little or no access to water, electricity, and a safe home increases the risk of disease and injury, jeopardizing people’s health, safety and lives.
