Reviving the wishes of thousands by rehabilitating water wells in Darfur, Sudan.

The 'Revive A Wish' Campaign

The ‘Revive a Wish’ Campaign. We are planning to refurbish over a dozen hand-pump water wells in Darfur, Sudan which will work to bring clean drinking water to villages once again. ABOUT US

The wishing well company is for the people. The idea of tossing a coin into a well after making a wish increasing the chances of that wish coming true was incorporated into the foundation of our name. In our context, we believe that when one contributes to building a water well, it essentially fulfils the wishes of those in need and in turn your wishes will be fulfilled too. It’s our way of saying ‘what goes around comes around’. This is a key belief in our organization that has even inspired the name of our current campaign: ‘Revive a Wish’.

Since our founding in 2020, we have brought clean and accessible drinking water to over a dozen communities in sub-Saharan Africa by building water wells. In doing so, we provided individuals affected by water insecurity a platform and voice to be heard by thousands through a social media interview series, “What would you wish for?”; to allow others to empathize with strangers. By providing a voice to the voiceless and letting neglected populations tell their own daily stories, and struggles, we have become advocates for many underserved populations.

We are proud to say that The Wishing Well Company is officially registered by the government of Canada as a Non-Profit Organization. We understand how important transparency with our work is, and we’ve taken all the appropriate measures to ensure that.

WHY THE WISHING WELL COMPANY

  • We are one of the few organizations to employ qualified locals to build and maintain our projects! Instead of turning to companies to build our wells, we at the Wishing Well Company recognized a dire need to tackle the high unemployment of locals in third world countries. We employ locals in communities that are specialized in building water wells while creating a generous pay wage.
  • We develop a tightly knit connection with all the communities we assist! It has been one of the pillars of our organizations to humanize the issue of the global water crisis. The communities suffering from such crisis are more than the statistics we see online; they are first and foremost humans. Accordingly, alongside our humanitarian efforts we have found it equally important to become advocates and storytellers for those suffering. We give these communities a platform to share their stories and struggles; ultimately putting a face to the struggle we often hear about.
  • We continuously abide by sustainable practices while conducting our work! By utilizing a public health approach, we work with local health professionals and community members in Africa to determine sustainable approaches to increase health resource allocation in various rural communities.
  • We give locals a say in our humanitarian aid! By utilizing peer reviewed articles, alongside the knowledge of individuals on the ground, we have adopted a community-based approach to aiding specific regions. Working alongside health officials, professionals, and other experts to determine an efficient plan of action. It is clear after reading into policy, talking to villagers, and observing the success of past efforts that the voices of those living in rural areas are constantly neglected by authoritative figures. Thus, part of the pillars of our non-profit is to provide villages with a say in our humanitarian relief with the understanding that they understand their needs the best and carry the wisdom to contribute constructively.
  • We document every step of the well building process to provide transparency allowing you to see how your donations are making an impact on the ground. While the project may be taking place far from home, you can feel much more connected by receiving timely updates, photos, and other relevant information. You will be confident in knowing that we are using your donations appropriately and the project is progressing as planned.

The Water Crisis in Darfur, Sudan

  • Darfur is located in the Sahel region of Sudan, an area that is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The changing climate has caused the region to experience longer and more severe droughts, which have led to the drying up of rivers, streams, and wells, leaving many people without access to clean and safe drinking water.
  • The conflict in the region has also contributed to the water crisis. Since 2003, there has been a civil war in Darfur, which has led to the displacement of millions of people. The conflict has resulted in the destruction of infrastructure, including water sources, which has further exacerbated the water crisis.
  • The lack of access to clean and safe drinking water has led to the spread of waterborne diseases, such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. These diseases have caused the deaths of thousands of people, particularly children under the age of five.
  • The water crisis has also had a significant impact on the livelihoods of the people of Darfur. Many people rely on agriculture for their livelihoods, but the lack of water has made it difficult for them to grow crops. This has led to food shortages and malnutrition, particularly among children.
  • Furthermore, the water crisis has had a significant impact on women and girls. In many communities, it is the responsibility of women and girls to collect water for their families. The lack of access to water has meant that they must travel further to find water, often putting them at risk of sexual assault and violence.
  • Solutions to the water crisis in Darfur include investing in water infrastructure such as boreholes and wells, promoting sustainable water management practices, and resolving the conflict in the region. These solutions can help to ensure that people have access to clean and safe drinking water, improve food security, and protect the livelihoods of the people of Darfur.

Importance of Well Renovations

Until 2022, the focus of The Wishing Well Foundation was to build new wells in and around sub-Saharan Africa. In the past few years, with the help of our supporters we were able to find success in our mission to build several water wells in the region to the benefit of local villages and communities.

However, in 2022 an important issue was raised to our organization. Although there are many organizations that exist to build water wells in water-scarce regions, very few deliver a promise to maintain the wells. The result: wells that are no longer operating or operating in a poor state. Erosion in the ground or cracking cement can lead to contaminated water forcing people to travel for water which hinders development opportunities.

Our team decided that we will set forth a plan known as the “Revive-a-wish” mission in which we can upgrade existing water wells with a better design and more robust modern materials in the areas that need it the most. In addition, we will train villagers to manage the wells and make minor repairs if needed. The team will leave behind spare parts and connect them to local suppliers.

Giving villages access to clean water is essential in promoting growth throughout generations. Having access to clean water allows children to receive education and women to start businesses. The cost to renovate a well is $1000 (subject to change). Please consider supporting our project by donating today. Any amount you can donate will help ensure clean water to villages for years to come.

The Importance of Building Water Wells

Building water wells in the affected areas of Darfur, Sudan is of great importance in addressing the water crisis in the region. There are several benefits to building water wells, including:

  1. Access to clean and safe drinking water: Water wells provide a reliable source of clean and safe drinking water for the communities in the affected areas. This reduces the risk of waterborne diseases and improves the overall health of the people in the region.
  2. Improved food security: Many people in Darfur rely on agriculture for their livelihoods, but the lack of water has made it difficult for them to grow crops. Water wells can provide the necessary water for irrigation, which can improve crop yields and food security in the region.
  3. Economic benefits: Access to water can also have economic benefits for the communities in Darfur. With water wells, communities can engage in small-scale businesses such as selling water and farming, which can create employment opportunities and generate income.
  4. Empowerment of women and girls: In many communities in Darfur, women and girls are responsible for collecting water for their families. The lack of access to water sources often puts them at risk of sexual assault and violence. Water wells can provide a safe and reliable source of water, which can reduce the risk of violence and empower women and girls to engage in other productive activities.

Overall, building water wells in the affected areas of Darfur, Sudan is crucial in addressing the water crisis in the region. It can improve the health, food security, and economic well-being of the people in the region, as well as reduce the risk of violence against women and girls.

Fundraiser Extended

Dear Supporters,

From the bottom of our hearts, we are truly grateful for all the support you have shown towards our organization. With your help, we are one step closer to fulfilling our wish of making clean, and accessible drinking water a reality for all. Our fundraiser has been extended due the recent rise in tensions in Sudan. Specifically, the region we operate in, el-Geneina, Darfur has experienced a heightened level of violence in the past few weeks. As such, we will prioritize the safety of our team on the ground and carry out our work once the situation has de-escalated.

In the meantime, let's continue spreading the word about our cause. These regions in Darfur are more in need of our support than ever!

With appreciation,

Kabier Izzeldin
