Picture a Palestinian mother, her heart pounding with fear, as she struggles to protect her children from the relentless bombardment overhead. Without any shelter, she must rely solely on using her own body to shield her children from the horrors taking place around them…

Ramadan serves as a reminder to act on our duties as Muslims, one of which is to extend a helping hand to those in need, embodying the Islamic spirit of compassion and solidarity. The urgency to provide Gazans with shelter intensifies with each passing day, demanding our immediate action to support vulnerable families.

Amidst the crisis, Action For Humanity Canada is working to rebuild hope. 

The "Building Hope: Homes for Families in Gaza" campaign by AFH aims to raise sufficient funds during Ramadan to establish an Emergency Shelter Camp, dedicated to extending a lifeline to families in Gaza. This camp will feature weather-resistant shelters designed to shield its residents from the elements and provide enhanced protection amidst the surrounding violence, while also preserving their privacy. 

For families in Gaza, every passing moment without proper shelter is filled with dread and uncertainty. Will their home be the next target? Will their children be safe? The concerns of children, too young to comprehend the magnitude of the danger surrounding them, are written across their faces as they cling to their parents, seeking solace and safety in the midst of chaos.

In Gaza, the lack of shelter pose challenges that extend far beyond the basic necessity of safety. Women, in particular, confront a disheartening reality where the scarcity of privacy and adequate facilities forces them to endure the discomfort and indignity of using washrooms in the presence of men they don't know. The ongoing crisis occurring in Gaza already places women and young girls in a particularly vulnerable position, and being forced to expose themselves further due to lack of shelter increases their sense of vulnerability and insecurity.

The urgency lies in the lives at stake, the families huddled together in makeshift shelters, praying for relief from the violence. Every donation brings us one step closer to providing that relief, one step closer to ensuring that no one is left exposed and vulnerable in the face of danger. 

AFH RESPONDS WITH IMMEDIATE AID

Our response to date has reached over 100,000 people, and we continue to serve more. Our impact to date includes:

• Mass food shipment to Gaza from Egypt - 205 tonnes of food items including 50 tonnes rice, 25 tonnes pasta, 70 tonnes flour, 6000 bottles of oil, 3000 packages of sanitary pads, packed on 9 trucks in total. The trucks are expected to reach Gaza in the next 2 weeks.

• Installation of latrines AFH completed the installation of 30 emergency latrines in a shelter within Rafah. There are units available for both men, women and people with disabilities
   
• Health care support in Egypt - AFH team have been visiting patients from Gaza currently in Egypt and covering healthcare expenses.
   
• Distribution of Food and Hygiene Items to 4,320 people.
   
• Distribution of baby milk in UNWRA shelters: 2,000 babies benefitted from the distribution of baby milk formula in partnership with the UN who contributed with clean water.

• Distribution of Medical Supplies: 20,000 people received essential medical supplies. 
   
• Distribution of Hot Meals: Phase 1 – Approximately 5,100 people received hot meals (Oct 23 – Nov 23) Phase 2 – 10,160 people received hot meals (Dec 23 – Jan 24). Total people reached – 15, 260.
   
• Distribution of Food, NFIs: 22,500 people received ready to eat meals, NFIs, some including hygiene kits, and clean water.
   
• Distribution of NFIs (Hygiene kits, women dignity kits etc) – 15,000 people reached.
   
• Distribution of clean water - 54,000 litres of clean water to 27,000 people.
