September 29 - Update from family member/friend.

Sheikh passed away September 29, 1:13 am.  The family is quickly making arrangements to transport him and family members to Oklahoma.  Unexpected costs associated with caring for someone who has experienced COVID have arisen.  We appreciate everyone's support in our community.

JazakAllah - MaSalam

September 28 - Assalmu-Alaikum Rahmatullahi Wabarkathuh.

I, Sister Taqiyah Al-Basir, have the displeasure of sharing the need for emergency funds to assist our family, family of Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Basir, in our endeavors to assist his return to his Creator.  Currently Sheikh is losing a battle to COVID as his brain functions have ceased and lungs collapsed.  We are moving him to hospice care September 28th so that he may have us around him to perform his wishes of an Islamic environment for his last breaths on this Earth/Duniya. Aside for burial assistance in an all Muslim grave, other relief  is being sought to support myself and my 6 grandchildren. Supporting our family right now is still in no way a measure of gratitude to the work he has always shared with his Ummah; our mosques, our families, our children, and our members in our community who never sought help, but needed help.

The Legacy of Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Bashir

Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Basir, born in 1940 and from Brooklyn, New York.  He reverted back to Islam in 1962 at Masjid Daoud on State Street.  MashAllah he always pursued seeking Allah's favor with his Dawah and was always very modest in sharing the numbers of souls he saved from the hellfire.  Whether he was educating young children, guiding older Muslim youth or modeling adults with the word of Allah.  Sheikh always provided down to Earth and real-world application of our Faith with such a relevant level of street knowledge that moved hearts for over 6 decades!

His hidden wit always showcased the work of Allah in a way that connected one's soul to our Din.  He had many analogies and/or examples he used to help those he educated visualize the beauty of Islam. One example taken from Brother Suhaib Webb (Sheikh was his teacher and who he took Shahada with), "If you can't push the blanket off you for fajr, how are you gong to push back injustice."

We have been married 40 years and enjoyed raising our family of 8 kids and 15 grandchildren, especially the 6 living with us currently. The past few years he struggled with various ailments that slowly weakened his pace, never his love for Allah.  Always guiding his children and grandchildren, he never dwindled in his devotion to Allah.  He always submitted to His will and decisions as his own health failed.  His love for his students, his brothers, and his community was divided amongst the love and respect to his wife, kids and grandchildren.  To be part of his loving heart is what made him everyone's Muealim (teacher). Hence, those who knew him called him Sheikh, respect and admiration of their local teacher.

Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Basir was always teaching through his Dawah efforts in jails or other environments were disparity was high.  To his working with his me and running an Islamic daycare.  To leading youth groups for teens and young boys.  To leading Jummah Khutbahs.  If there was a soft, melodic, yet very passionate and somehow loud voice, it was always Sheikh's voice bringing a level of real-world sense and balance in our lives.

When the time comes we will honor his wishes and bring him home to Oklahoma for a burial in the Mercy Cemetery with the Janazah prayer at Islamic Society of Greater OKC (St Clair and 39th) Mosque. In supporting Sheikh, our family has one request.  Please honor Sheikh through prayers and remembering his stance on photos of him. Please avoid, at this trying time, sharing of his imagery.

JazakAllah Khairun. Sister Taqiyah Al-Basir
