This program is designed to support women survivors of violence in taking back their power through strength training and weight lifting.

Muslim women reclaim their power through strength training and empowerment program in the GTA

The Sisters in Power pilot program aims to support the empowerment of Muslim women to reclaim their power in mind, body and spirit. The first of its kind in Canada offered by the only women-led, women-run mosque in Canada.

The program which is a collaboration between the Women’s Mosque of Canada and WerkHaus Fitness Studio aims to mesh and meld health and fitness with holistic healing. Here women learn to embrace their bodies, work on any limiting belief systems that may hinder their growth and ability to thrive, as well as find inner peace of heart and mind.

The groups are specifically designed to support women who are fleeing from honour-based violence and religious abuse. While we recognize that violence against women exists in every community, this program aims to connect with Muslim women from all across the GTA.

Women learn to work with barbells, learning various techniques and pushing past their perceived physical limits. The training emphasizes the idea to each woman that “you are stronger than you think and more powerful than you know.”

“Muslim women have always been strong, powerful leaders in Islamic history.  Learning strength training is simply a way to remind us in whose footsteps we walk” says Founder and Imama of the Women’s Mosque of Canada Farheen Khan.

Furthermore, “there is a direct correlation between strength training and the health and wellness benefits on women’s mental health, particularly those who have experienced trauma” says Co-Founder of WerkHaus fitness Zac Chan.

The program runs for on 8 week cycles. The organizers are seeking funds to run future iterations of the program as a waitlist has already started to form. The program was recently featured on CBC Radio's Fresh Air. Access the clip here:
