5% of the population in Somalia are living with disabilities. Decades of conflict, inadequate health services and discrimination have left people with disabilities at risk of forced marriage, violence, rape and evictions. 

Children with disabilities are invisible in Somali society and face many barriers to inclusion including the inaccessible physical environment, lack of awareness in the communities, insufficient teaching skills, negative attitudes and stigma, poverty, and a severe shortage of assistive devices and mobility aids.

Girls with disabilities are particularly vulnerable, as boys with disabilities tend to get what few opportunities there are available to children with disabilities.

We can help change this.

By supporting Wheels to Heal’s (www.wheelstoheal.org.uk) Somalia Ramadan Mobility Aid Container 2024 Campaign you will helping these very people highlighted. The 40ft container will be filled with over 500 recycled aids such as wheelchairs, zimmer frames, rollators, walking sticks, commodes, hoists, care beds and much more. 

In Hargeisa, Somaliland, Somalia we are working in conjunction with our established charity partner - Diversity Action Network (DAN) www.dansomaliland.org to help distribute these life transforming aids. 

By responding to this appeal you will also be supporting an entirely volunteer led charity recycling life transforming aids that would otherwise end up in landfill, and gifting them to people and institutes in desperate need who can only dream of such provisions.   

EDUCATION

Children with disabilities have very limited access to any educational opportunities and face widespread discrimination in the education sector, both from teachers and other students.

Limited resources, limited teacher skills and capacity, insufficient funding, and environmental and attitudinal barriers make inclusive and special needs education a challenge.

Few public and private buildings, communications, and transport options are accessible to persons with disabilities.

There is no specific healthcare or financial support system for disabled people in Somalia, increasing their dependence on others and making independent life difficult.

We therefore aim to change the society in which vulnerable groups live by removing or minimizing the attitudinal, physical, institutional, informational and communication barriers, as well as legislative, procedural and programmatic barriers. We also aim to increase their access to essential economic and social services.
