A Passion for studying the Arabic Language

Salaams/Peace, 

My name is Bayinah Abdush Shaheed, I am 15 years old, and I possess a strong passion for learning the Arabic language; I am very determined and I am always searching for the next opportunity to learn. I have been a student of the Arabic language from kindergarten through fifth grade and I recently participated in Middlebury Monterey Language Academy's Arabic language intensive program. Also, as a homeschooler and as a Muslim I have been thoroughly exposed to the Arabic language; it is basically a part of who I am.

I believe as an English speaking indigenous American, I should learn other languages in order to increase my knowledge and further my purpose to promote intercultural understanding and appreciation for others. Studying the Arabic language is one step towards my goal to change the world through learning more languages therefore broadening my horizons and increasing my creativity. 

The Impact

Learning a language, especially Arabic, brings a positive impact to my life. In the western world, Arabic is not spoken as common as other languages and Arabic is a language that is immersed in an eye-opening culture. Learning Arabic can help me teach others and communicate wisely with those who are native Arabic speakers. As an individual that has been exposed to Arabic at a young age, it inspires me to travel more and expose myself to cultures that bring a liberating and exciting experience to my life! I will learn more that just Arabic; I will be immersed in a language that can help me gain a bigger and brighter perspective of the world and help me understand the culture, background and traditions of the Arab world. Also, it will increase my knowledge about our connection to each other and the similarities we share as a whole.

My Achievements

• Awarded a full scholarship (room, board and tuition) to Middlebury Monterey Arabic Language Academy for 4 weeks in Pomona, CA
• Awarded a full scholarship to study acting and dance at Adventure Theatre in Rockville, MD
• Started my own pastry business at 12 years old and won a pastry contest
• Won 1st place at the Harlem Renaissance Talent show
• Won 3rd place in an Arabic Talent Show
