The catastrophic and rapid escalation of conflict in Sudan has imposed immeasurable suffering onto millions of civilians. Whether they are subjected to violence, displacement or subsequent poverty, the situation is worsening overtime with nearly 16,000 people killed and tens of thousands injured.

According to the United Nations, over 6 million people have been displaced internally while almost 2 million have escaped to neighbouring countries. Figures have shown that 24 million people are in need of urgent aid including 18 million of them facing catastrophic levels of hunger, with UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, calling it a “crisis of epic proportions”.

About 65% of the population in Sudan lacks access to medical care with 70-80% of hospitals within conflict zones no longer functional due to clashes.  The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has reported various outbreaks of deadly diseases such as cholera and malaria, resulting in a severe healthcare crisis in the region.

Important infrastructure such as water treatment plants, power stations etc. have been severely damaged or even destroyed in many parts of the country.

The conflict continues to have a devastating impact not only on Sudan but also neighbouring countries which have consequently been receiving the influx of refugees fleeing the war including South Sudan, Chad and Egypt.
