Residents of the capital of Somaliland, Hargeisa, have woken to scenes of devastation after fire tore through the main market overnight.

The blaze destroyed hundreds of businesses in the densely crowded market area as firefighters struggled to gain access to the flames. Hundreds of families are now left without their livelihood. 

The market was a lifeline for many poor families who depended on it to make a living. This market was the economic center of Hargeisa and the biggest open-air market in the city - was a hub of activity with hundreds of small businesses.

The fire happened just a few hours after the month of Ramadan began, and 28 people have been reported to be injured.

Emergency Response Effort

We need your support to aid communities affected by the devastating fire, rebuild their lives with food, clothing, furniture, other essentials, and funds to pay bills.

Most importantly, we must help those who list their business and inventory in the fire by rebuilding their shops, and providing cash assistance to jump-start this businesses once more.

Food Aid

$65 will provide a family with food for an entire month. Your donation means that these families will have their needs met for the month of Ramadan. The food package contains 25kg of rice, 25kg of wheat flour, 10g of sugar, and 3 L of cooking oil.

Essentials

Provide the families affected with clothing, furniture, and cash assistance to cover the cost of their bills while their businesses are out of operation. $150 will cover the needs of a family for an entire month.

Business Grant

Donate money to a fund that will help the businesses affected cover the costs of their lost inventory and repair damaged stores.
