Muslims in Colombia and the rest of Latin America constitute some of the most underserved populations globally. Much of Latin America, including Colombia, suffers from political instability, extreme poverty, and isolation from the greater global Muslim community. People in these regions are begging to learn more about Islam, and the existing Muslims feel very isolated and abandoned. El Encuentro is determined to solve this problem. 

The Muslim community here in Medellin, Colombia is growing rapidly with more than 450 families having accepted Islam in the last 3 years! Many of these individuals, however, are neglected financially and spiritually after taking their shahada. After becoming Muslim, many in the community are rejected by their families, face difficult financial circumstances, and are given little guidance on any of the basic tenets of the religion. Our community programs are already helping to change that narrative.

The Spanish term “El Encuentro” is commonly translated as the act of coming together. The term reflects our purpose of bringing people to God. Our aim is to provide a healthy, centered and spiritually grounded community in which people learn to live Islam based on traditional understandings of the faith within our current cultural context. 

Support Our Translation Project

There are over 7 million Hispanic, Latino, and Caribbean Muslims in the Americas. However, there exists very little content in Spanish and few qualified Spanish-speaking scholars in the region. The few available resources are mostly outdated, unintelligible, and culturally inappropriate. 

Our team of translators has been working diligently to provide content in Spanish that is easily accessible. Our programs work to effectively disseminate that content in a way that is culturally relevant. Your support would help us to translate more material, collaborate with more qualified Latino/Hispanic scholars to provide more content, support upcoming religious leaders in the region, and spread our content to reach more communities in need.

Our Welcome Gift Project

Working with local artisans, we have compiled a welcome package for new Muslims. Each package will include a Colombian artisanal handcrafted prayer mat, Being Muslim in Spanish, a Spanish Quran, and a Spanish Seerah of the Prophet PBUH. Future packages hope to also entail Colombian-made prayer beads. Working with our local artisan, we have made over 100 prayer mats already. These convert care packages will be distributed both in Colombia and for Latino converts in the United States.
