Ashton Community Fridge is a volunteer-run non-profit initiative that aims to reduce food waste and support local residents in all aspects of their lives.

Not just a Foodbank but much more, a space that connects donors with those in need, the fridge helps to ensure that nutritious food doesn't go to waste whilst also providing additional valuable support to individuals and families experiencing insecurity in the Tameside area.

Ashton Central Mosque Foodbank is excited to announce a new chapter!

With your support over the past 15 months we have supported over 3,250 people!

For the past couple of months we have been working closely with 'Halifax Community Fridge' to help build a network of community fridges nationwide.

We're now rebranding our foodbank to
Ashton Community Fridge
joining a nationwide network of community fridges dedicated to reducing food waste and supporting our communities.

Our fridge will continue to be open to everyone in the community, regardless of faith or background.

No referral needed, no questions asked.

What does this change mean for you?

More Accessibility
Our community fridge will start to open more frequently.

Expanded Offerings
We'll be able to provide a wider range of fresh food items, including fruits, vegetables, and dairy products as well as the current offerings of long life food items, toys, books, clothes, baby essentials and  household items.

Pantry
This is a table of essentials that is available within the mosque community hall whenever the mosque is open, available for anyone to take whenever needed.

Pet Foodbank 
Free cat and dog food for anyone in need.

Increased Impact
By joining the national network, we can share best practices and collaborate with other community fridges to make a bigger difference.

August 2023

We have launched our very own independent ‘Ashton Central Mosque Foodbank’. We collect food and essentials via baskets placed in both men’s and ladies entrances as well as donations from local businesses.

We hold monthly Foodbank Parcel Distribution Events where we welcome anyone that needs a helping hand.

If we get someone using the Food Bank on a regular basis, we have a discrete conversation and refer them to the local council for extra support.

We provide parcels filled with long life food and essential throughout the month via requests in person or via the request form www.ashtoncentralmosque.com/foodbank

These are both collected from the mosque or delivered to the person's home if required.

We also provide parcels to Ashton Women’s Refuge that houses women and children that have left their homes due to domestic violence.

Alhamdulilaah since August, we have supported over 200 families.

Since the launch of our foodbank, we have seen an increase in people wanting to come and see the mosque and learn about Islam.

*Extra items are added based on donations received.

*Donations may be allocated to the Soup Kitchen if required.

We work in collaboration with Tameside Council on a number of related projects that we provide referrals to:

Healthy Start Scheme

Healthy Start scheme helps with buying healthy foods.

The scheme is for pregnant women and people who are responsible for children aged under 4.

These people are given a Healthy Start card with money added onto it. They are able to use the card to buy:

-Infant formula milk

-Vitamins

‘Ask for Ellen’

‘Ask for Ellen’, This is a Warburton’s initiative with Morrisons to support families in the UK. As part of the initiative, everyone and anyone, both adults and children, can ‘Ask for Ellen’ at any Morrisons Café to receive two toasted crumpets, with butter and jam for free - no questions asked.

ACM Soup Kitchen

Insha’Allah in 2024 we are planning on starting a Soup Kitchens where we distribute cooked food I.e., rice to the local homeless shelters.

We understand the winter months are the toughest times for the shelters and we hope to support them as much as possible.

Ashton Central Mosque actively encourages it’s congregants to help all the local community members of Ashton under Lyne who are facing difficult times in their lives. Giving is the ethos of Islam and taking care of near and distant neighbours is the obligation of every Muslim. The community in it’s first donation donated 400KG of food to the Tameside East Food bank and continues to donate generously every month.
