Attach Your Heart to the East London Mosque

The UK’s largest Mosque and Islamic Centre

The East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre is the UK’s largest Muslim organisation serving the community for over a century. Established in 1910, the Mosque and Centre have gone on to become the busiest in Europe. The Mosque’s primary vision is to see a world of God-consciousness, respect, dignity and justice, fulfilled through its mission to serve, educate and inspire.

The East London Mosque was built by the community, for the community to serve the community. Today, it is a large and busy complex that offers over 30 services and projects for the benefit of everyone in Religious, Social Welfare, Community Cohesion and Education & Training.

Helping New Muslims: Fulfilling the Islamic Mission

We are blessed to know that nearly 1500 new Muslims have taken their Shahada at the East London Mosque over the years. The Mosque’s Islam Awareness Project has been running since the early 1990s, helping New Muslims on their journey into practising Islam.

We understand the numerous challenges new Muslims face, and some have made enormous sacrifices to accept the faith, while others have been completely disowned by their families. Our Islamic duty is to continue helping our new Muslim brothers and sisters in faith by providing them with a safe space to learn and grow as Muslims.

The Next Generation of Huffaz

The Mosque and Centre are also home to the London East Academy and Al-Mizan schools. These schools combined teach the UK national curriculum and crucially Islamic studies. Al-Mizan and London East Academy students are among some of the brightest students in London, with exceptionally high grades.

One of the challenges that Muslims in the UK face is the lack of Huffaz, those that have memorised the Qur’an by heart. It is often hard to find Huffaz to lead salah, especially during Ramadan for Tarawih. Alhamdullilah, to date, over 100 Huffaz have graduated from our schools, and many have gone on to lead prayers at various Mosques and Islamic Centres across the country.

Interfaith Work: Challenging Anti-Muslim Hatred

As ambassadors of the Islamic faith, we work closely with those of other faiths and none to ensure our communities remain cohesive and united. It is a wide known fact that far-right groups in the UK are very active and continue to target Muslim communities with their Islamophobic hate. Some of these groups have even protested outside the East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre. However, through our continual work in building relationships and fostering a greater understanding of other faiths, we have remained united in challenging anti-Muslim bigotry in the UK.

The Mosque and Centre is also home to the Baraka Khan Visitors’ Gallery, which is dedicated to bringing communities together, increasing cross-cultural dialogue, and creating a safe space of learning for people of all faiths and none.

Helping Refugees

The East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre also helped over 200 refugee families in the past two years. These refugee families arrived on our doorstep from war-torn regions of the world, seeking safety and security. Many did not have necessities or even a spare set of clothes when they arrived in the UK, making a perilous journey across continents. The Mosque and Centre continue to support refugees and asylum seekers seeking support and help.

Food Bank: Tackling Food Poverty

As families in London continue to struggle financially with cost of living, East London Mosque distributed food packs to some of the most vulnerable in the city. The food packs support families facing hardship because of cuts to welfare benefits, losing their jobs due to Covid-19 and increased pressures due to high energy bills.

The Mosque and Centre has also set up a dedicated foodbank so that struggling families are able to drop by and take essential food items.

Helping Muslim Charities

The Mosque and Centre has an immense track record of allowing Muslim charities from the UK and abroad to fundraise to alleviate humanitarian causes globally. Our congregation has donated over £2.5m in the last decade to charitable causes.

Where will your donations go?

We cannot continue our good work without the support of our generous donors globally. Because of your donations, the Mosque and Centre can provide projects and services that benefit so many Muslims and indeed wider society.

Every penny donated to the East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre will further our Islamic vision and mission and lead the Muslim community in the UK through words and actions. We will use your donations to help grow and maintain our services and projects and support the communities we serve. There is nothing better than donating to this House of Allah, which continues to do so much good in the community and is a beacon for others to follow in the UK.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Allah said: ‘Spend, O son of Adam, and I shall spend on you"
