As CEO of Islamic Relief, visiting these IR projects for Syrian Refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey was the most impactful trip of my life.
In Lebanon, we visited Baqaa Valley, where I encountered refugees who were using plastic sheets alone as protection from snow and ice.
In many camps, standing water remained as a daily struggle and constant health risk.
Many of these families have lived in these conditions for nearly a decade.
Myself and other IRUSA staff were also able to visit the “No Child Left Behind” school project in Lebanon, which is a free-standing school build and funded by IRUSA that is now fully sustainable. Many children who are refugees are now attending the school; the project is changing an entire community for the better.
Isra is a Syrian activist for refugee rights. She leads Oxfam America’s Migration and Protection Campaign. Her efforts to influence public opinion and policymakers, often collaborating with NGO coalitions and partners across multiple sectors.
Isra previously served as the Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator at Syria Relief and Development; a humanitarian NGO working in Syria, where she consulted on gender justice and spoke at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Isra is a Public Advocate for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency USA (UNRWA USA) and active on social media, reaching more than 200,000 people of people on her platform, @Israspeaks
Isra has been interviewed on Democracy Now, ABC News, Al Jazeera, CNN, the Associated Press, AJ+, and NowThis, among others. She's recently been chosen by the Amplifier Foundation as one of the ten faces of the We the Future campaign, which will bring educational resources on social justice topics into more than 20,000 schools across the country.

A conflict that started on March 15, 2011 has now surpassed 8 years of violence and fear across Syria, and beyond its borders. At least half of those affected are children–more than 50% of Syrian children no longer attend school. For many of them, this war has been all they’ve ever known.
The Islamic Relief USA community has been able to serve more than 9.3 million Syrians in need, in Syria and in neighboring countries like Jordan and Lebanon—giving items like food, medical aid, water, blankets, mattresses, plastic sheeting, plastic mats, shoes, jackets, hats, sweatshirts, gloves, waterproof coats, socks.
