Our Space

Our approach has been to grow naturally and organically. Over the years, volunteers and attendees have developed meaningful bonds across diverse backgrounds based on the shared goals of learning and growing together, while respecting one another’s unique journey and pace. The Majlis is a public space that is meant to look and feel more like an inviting home such that all attendees should feel welcome. As such, community members are encouraged to bring family, neighbors, and co-workers of every level of religious knowledge and practice, as well those from other faiths. It is designed to be welcoming to mothers of young children with Mommy and Me classes as well as Children's Story Time hosted twice a month. There is plenty of comfortable seating for community members to relax and enjoy themselves as they build lasting connections. To help foster these conversations, we always have our tea and coffee stations stocked for use at any time. However, generous donations are still needed to cover the basic costs of sustaining our space, programs, and staff who make it all happen. We pray that every penny donated is spent in the best and most blessed of ways.

Our Story

The Majlis was founded by Shaykha Muslema Purmul and Shaykh Jamaal Diwan out of a desire to facilitate spiritually nourishing experiences of togetherness in environments that would be welcoming and meaningful for people of all backgrounds and levels of knowledge and religious practice. For the first two years, community members gathered in homes, clubhouses, and rental halls for study circles, gatherings of remembrance, classes, special events, and a monthly home-cooked meal distribution to the homeless. In January 2019, we were blessed to open our first public community space in Southern California. Through the pandemic in 2020 and the beginning of 2021 we moved  virtually, hosting all of our classes and special events online through Zoom, Facebook and Youtube. In the Summer of 2021, we hosted our first in-person event with Imam Zaid Shakir in addition to a Summer Retreat with Shaykh Walead Mosaad. In January of 2022, we began renting a space, and were once again blessed with a space to call our own where we host classes for all of our community to attend. 

2023 was a year of growth and learning for us. We officially took on an Executive Director as the demands of our organization grew. We also achieved a major goal of ours in launching The Anas Ibn Malik Community Servants Seminary Program to take our pursuit of knowledge that we share with our community to the next level. In addition, after many years we were finally once again blessed to go on a  Fall Umrah trip with our beloved community.

All in all, The Majlis seeks to develop and nurture safe community spaces where people can learn and live Islam, based on the traditional sources of understanding the faith, while acknowledging the particular challenges of our context. Our efforts are focused around religious education, spiritual refinement, love, and service.

We continue our efforts praying to see a revival of a holistic understanding of Islam that emphasizes how to be in this world in a way that opens the door for a deeper commitment to the Prophetic way for all. We dream of an ecosystem of spaces and services that enables that to occur. ????
