On February 23, 2018, ICE snatched Gibril Jarju, a husband and a father of 2 daughters, as he was leaving to go to work. Without warning, they transported him across statelines away from his family.
On March 7, 2018, he was deported to The Gambia, West Africa , a country he fled 17 years ago due to political asylum. He was deported wearing the same clothes from 2 weeks earlier and with only his cell phone, and wallet on him. His family was not given an opportunity to even pack him a suitcase.
"[There was] no time for questions. During the wee early hours of the morning, they had him handcuffed in the back of their vehicle and they gave me one last chance to see him. We were not allowed to hug or embrace. It was just a goodbye. I could hear my two daughters screaming in the background as they drove him away in the darkness" - Wilitha Jarju
Living Cost and Attorney Fees
His family needs help with living cost which include sending money on a monthly basis to support Gibril Jarju. A full time job pays $24 a month in Gambia, West Africa. The family is currently dealing with mental trauma and while the wife is working it’s difficult as she is disabled with a bilateral hearing loss and the youngest has downs sysdrome and heart defects.

In 2013, Wilitha Jarju a USA born citizen filed the marriage Petition for Gibril to obtain his green card and it was approved. However, ICE would not cooperate in reopening his asylum case so that they could place the Approved Petition into his case and then he would have had his green card. Unlike most of the people being deported today, Gibril did NOT have a criminal record of any kind NOT even a traffic ticket. He worked legally with a social security number and permission to work card which he obtained yearly from the Immigration’s Office.
Not only that, he filed his taxes yearly and in a timely manner.
Gibril was a very kind and noble man, that people admired and loved.

Update: September 5, 2018
Gibril was finally able to obtain Gambia Drivers License. He will need this along with his birth certificate to get a passport to come back the on USA. When they deported him, ICE took all forms of identification he had in his wallet away from him, along with the emergency passport they obtained. He arrived in Gambia with nothing but his cell phone and the clothes that he wore the day of his arrest. Thanks to the $200 a month he was able to pay for a taxi to the city to obtain his ID and pay for his ID as well.
Supporting a Family Separated by ICE:
It is no doubt that deportation is a traumatizing experience for everyone involved. When recounting the morning that turned their world upside down, Wilitha knew that her life would not be the same. Now as the lone financial provider for both herself and two children. As well as supporting her husband in Gambia. She has a long and difficult task ahead.
As a community we must rally around this family and step up and support them. We must fight to bring Gibril home, and we must also rally around every family unjustly separated by deportations and cruel immigration policy.
Those who were close to him knew him as Gabe. He has lived in the United States for over 17 years, and is married to a U.S. citizen. When he went for walks in the neighborhood he would greet everyone he came across. He loved having tea parties with his two daughters. In the blink of an eye a woman lost her loving husband, and two daughters lost their beloved father.
