A 7.8 magnitude quake struck near Antakya and Gaziantep in the early hours of Monday while people were asleep.

The hopes of finding survivors is diminishing, a relief effort is now under way across much of southern Turkey and northern Syria following the earthquake that has killed almost 30,000 people and injured over 50,000.

According to UNHCR Nearly 5.3million people have been made homeless in Syria in these freezing temperatures. 

Rescuers are racing to save people trapped beneath the rubble after hundreds of buildings collapsed in both countries.

Turkey issued an international appeal for help.
