A Community’s Journey to Establishing a Masjid

For years, our Burmese Muslim community in Aurora, Colorado, held on to hope while praying in a small rental apartment. This modest space had served as our masjid, where we gathered for salah, Ramadan prayers, and community events. But our setup was never permanent, and it came with challenges.

One day, a neighbor filed a complaint about our prayers in the apartment, claiming it violated local regulations. The apartment management issued a violation notice, and the matter went to court. At the hearing, the judge gave us a stern warning: we could no longer use the apartment for religious or commercial purposes. To make matters worse, the apartment manager handed us a move-out notice on the same day.

This all unfolded during Ramadan, a time when our faith and unity are strongest. Faced with no place to gather for prayers, we knew we had to act quickly. With unwavering determination, we called upon every household in our refugee community to contribute. Families, many of whom were struggling financially, gave sacrificially. Each household donated $2,000, and in no time, we raised nearly $200,000.

With these funds in hand, we approached IjaraCDC, an Islamic financing organization. They understood our situation and approved our request for a property within the $450,000–$480,000 price range. Soon, we found a residential property listed for $455,000 that met our needs.

Purchasing the property was only the beginning. The next hurdle was zoning. The property was categorized as residential, but with the help of the Aurora Zoning Department and persistent effort, we succeeded in having it rezoned to a religious assembly. Alhamdulillah, our masjid was officially established!

The new masjid became a place for daily prayers, Friday sermons, and even an Islamic school program for our children. The community's dedication didn’t stop there. Everyone committed to paying off the remaining balance to IjaraCDC by the end of October 2025.

This journey was not easy, but it strengthened our faith and unity. Today, our masjid stands as a testament to the power of collective effort, faith, and perseverance. Alhamdulillah, we are grateful for the blessings and the support of every member of our community.

Help the House of Allah: The Blessings of Paying Off Its Debts

Supporting the House of Allah (Masjid) is one of the most noble deeds a Muslim can perform. It is an act that not only strengthens the community but also earns immense rewards in this world and the Hereafter.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever builds a mosque for the sake of Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 450)

When you contribute to paying off the debts or expenses of a Masjid, you are helping to sustain a place where:

• Salah (prayer) is performed daily.

• Knowledge is spread through Qur’an and Hadith teachings.

• The community gathers for guidance and support.

Sawab (Reward) of Helping the Masjid

1. Ongoing Charity (Sadaqah Jariyah): Every good deed performed in the Masjid, such as prayers, learning, or dhikr, will bring rewards to the one who helped sustain it.

2. Increased Barakah: Allah promises to multiply the wealth of those who give for His sake.

3. Forgiveness of Sins: Acts of charity, especially for Allah’s house, are a means of expiation of sins.

4. Elevated Status in the Hereafter: Your generosity will be a reason for Allah’s mercy and closeness on the Day of Judgment.

How Much Should You Give?

• No amount is too small; Allah looks at the intention behind your giving.

• Even a small contribution with sincerity can earn immense rewards.

Encourage others to join in this cause, as spreading good and inspiring others to give also earns you a share of the reward.

May Allah accept your efforts and grant you and your family endless blessings and a place in Jannat al-Firdaus.

Supporting the House of Allah is an act of Sadaqah Jariyah (صدقة جارية), a continuous charity that benefits you even after your time in this world. The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
"Whoever builds a mosque for the sake of Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
