Urgent appeal for donations to supply first responders and hospitals with life-saving tourniquets

Urgent Appeal for Humanitarian Aid in Gaza

Gaza is facing a devastating war, causing an urgent humanitarian crisis. The war means access to lifesaving medical supplies is severely limited. Tourniquets play a crucial role in emergency medical care, especially in situations where individuals are faced with severe bleeding and require immediate attention. The limited availability of such essential medical supplies in Gaza means countless civilians may die from preventable injuries.

The Glia Gaza team has engineered a robust, innovative 3D printed tourniquet, which prevented hundreds of deaths during times of conflict. It is designed for easy application by trained professionals and successfully controls severe bleeding on smaller limbs, including those of women and children. Because Glia’s tourniquet is locally manufactured, the Gaza team will ensure a steady supply of tourniquets during this time of escalated violence.

Campaign Update

With the severe escalation of the current situation, we have increased our goal so that we can meet the medical needs in the weeks to come. If through some miracle the war ends soon, we will use your generous donations to equip Gaza's emergency response teams and health facilities for possible future attacks.

Stop the Bleed: Gaza

This appeal is part of our ongoing Stop the Bleed: Gaza campaign. Attacks by the Israeli military on Gaza in 2008-09, 2012, 2014, 2018-20, and 2021 resulted in large numbers of preventable deaths from bleeding. The availability of some tourniquets in the Great March of Return in 2018-20 and the Israeli-led war in 2021 proved that tourniquets save lives.

During attacks in May and June 2023 against the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, first responders were faced with limited resources in attempting to treat nearly 200 people, many of whom, according to front-line paramedics, had life-threatening bleeding from their limbs. Gaza Emergency Physician Dr. Mohammad Al-Attar described the events on the ground in Gaza:

"Due to the lack of proper devices available in the field, paramedics had to use improvised tourniquets in an attempt to save lives. The feeling in Gaza is that further attacks are imminent. To ensure the ability of front-line first responders to effectively save lives amidst these extraordinary circumstances, it is imperative that they are equipped with thoroughly tested and reliable tourniquets."

To address fears of escalating violence, Glia donated its entire supply of locally made tourniquets to ambulance service providers in August 2023. In September, demonstrations at the Gaza-Israel border resulted in Palestinian protesters receiving numerous gunshot injuries in the lower extremities; ambulance crews applied the Gaza Tourniquet to those victims to save lives.

You can help save lives with your generous donation. Tourniquets in Gaza have been proven highly effective, but we need funds to manufacture and distribute these devices. Your donation will allow our team to produce and distribute tourniquets swiftly to where they are needed most: first responders and emergency rooms. Your donation will offer hope and chance at survival to the people of Gaza.

Our Previous Work in Gaza

Together with Islamic Relief Canada, Glia launched #PPE4Gaza in December 2019 to make and distribute personal protective equipment for healthcare workers in Gaza. Through the generosity of donors like you, we raised over $100,000, allowing us to respond almost immediately to the Ministry of Health’s need for PPE by 3D printing and distributing thousands of face shields. With the help of Medical Aid for Palestinians UK, we successfully shipped 3D printers and reusable respirators to Gaza so we could continue the work and increase local capacity.

In response to the bombardment of Gaza in 2021, Glia partnered with the International Development Relief Foundation to launch the Open Gaza Initiative, which will train and deploy engineers to refurbish and repair existing hospital medical equipment using cutting edge technology, such as 3D printing, local printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing, and use of desktop-scale CNC machines.

Two members of Glia, Drs. Benjamin Thomson and Tarek Loubani were also involved in EmpowerGAZA, a project that placed solar panels and batteries on four major hospitals in Gaza, providing uninterrupted power.

Our record shows, Glia’s team is committed to the health of all of those in need around the world and in Gaza.

#Appeal4Gaza - What We're Doing & What's Next

Dear loyal donors,

We hope that this message finds you well and in a moment of solace. We want to extend our sincere appreciation for your compassionate support of our recent campaign, "Urgent Gaza Appeal: Humanitarian and Medical Aid." The support for those in Gaza received from donors like you has been nothing short of extraordinary and the tremendous success of this campaign has surpassed our greatest expectations. This collective effort provides comfort amid the prevailing difficulties, highlighting the power of unity in making a positive impact during times of adversity.

WHAT WE'RE DOING
The funds raised have been instrumental in procuring materials, establishing full-time manufacturing of tourniquets in Canada, and locating trade routes by working with local Non-Profits in Cairo, Egypt, to facilitate the timely delivery of these critical medical aids to Gaza. We are manufacturing 2000 tourniquets to send, with 400 complete and ready to ship now and hundreds more in various stages of the manufacturing process. We plan to continue production and distribution every month until we meet this goal, pending the ability to produce these devices in Gaza. Your support plays a crucial role in providing a lifeline to those facing immense hardships, ensuring that casualties with treatable injuries don’t have their condition escalate to fatalities.

WHAT'S NEXT
Glia remains committed to supporting the people of Palestine. We have launched our Gaza Medical Support Initiative (launchgood.com/medicine4gaza), which is live on Launchgood.com. This campaign is focused on delivering healthcare workers and essential medical supplies to Gaza. Healthcare worker delegations have already been dispatched to Rafah, with the second delegation currently in service. Learn more and support this initiative by visiting launchgood.com/medicine4gaza

STAY UP TO DATE

As we navigate the path forward, we commit to keeping you informed of the progress of our efforts and the tangible impact they’re making. Stay current with our efforts by signing up for our email updates and newsletter directly at Glia.org.

Once again, thank you for your deeply compassionate support of Glia and Gaza, as we all wish for better times in Palestine in 2024. Your generosity is a source of comfort and hope during these challenging times, and we are profoundly grateful for your commitment.

With sincere appreciation,

Glia

We Are Almost There!

UPDATE: We have very nearly reached our goal of $150,000 USD to manufacture and distribute life-saving tourniquets in the Gaza Strip. Thank you for supporting our campaign, either through kind words, monetary donations, or sharing news about the work of Glia – without your support, we could not work towards achieving our goal of equal access
to care for all.

We also wanted to take this opportunity to provide you with two updates:

1. Our Canada office has been manufacturing and packaging tourniquets around the clock so they are ready to ship to Gaza as soon as it is feasible to do so. We will post an update here once the first shipment is sent.

2. Our entire team in Gaza has been displaced as a result of this war. Each member has seen their home destroyed and have been personally affected by the loss of loved ones. To help them rebuild their lives, we have launched a campaign in their honour:  www.launchgood.com/repairGaza

Here you will learn more about each of our Gaza team members, their heroic actions during this devastating conflict, and read about their own visions for a post-ceasefire world. Despite their hardships, they are all focused on the future, and we hope to make that transition as seamless for them as possible. For this Giving Tuesday, please consider supporting our team members who have dedicated their lives to the people of Gaza.

Thank you again to everyone for your unwavering support of Glia. We are truly humbled by your generosity.

UPDATE: Entering Aid Through Rafah

The relentless onslaught of violence into the Gaza Strip has been ongoing for almost a month. Our team in Gaza is still alive, and our Executive Director in Gaza, Dr. Mohammad Al-Attar, has spent nearly every waking moment tending to the injured at Al-Shifa Hospital.

Our office, of course, is completely unusable. We have responded to the crisis by manufacturing medical equipment in Canada with the intention of shipping it into Gaza via the Rafah crossing. We have a representative from Glia currently in Cairo making connections with NGOs in order to supply both aid and a medical delegation into the Strip as soon as it is possible to do so.

We appreciate everyone's kindness and generosity toward our campaign, toward our team members, and toward the people of Gaza who have suffered long enough. For them, we continue to forge ahead to do what we can to help while we also plan for a post-ceasefire world.

UPDATE: Distribution of Tourniquets

Thank you for your incredible support of this important, lifesaving project. So far thanks to your help, Glia has released over a thousand tourniquets into the field, many of which are being used by field medics. Unfortunately, the situation has deteriorated significantly in the past week.

The current situation

Glia's manufacturing facility in Gaza is badly damaged and cannot produce the plastic required for tourniquets at this time. While we have 3D printers available, our solar system and backup batteries appear to have been destroyed, and it is currently impossible to examine, let alone fix them.

The plan right now

At the moment, Glia is mobilizing a team to travel to the Egypt border and arrange a route for entry of tourniquets into Gaza in preparation for a ground invasion. We are producing at maximum speed in our international offices. The costs of production and transport are substantially higher than local production, however this is the only available option at the moment.

Plan for the future

Glia's long-term plan is to ensure there are thousands of tourniquets pre-positioned across the Gaza strip in grocery stores, schools, businesses and religious centers. Any of your donations not spent during this war will be put to a future strategy to ensure that Gaza never runs short of tourniquets again.

UPDATE: A Successful Tourniquet Delivery

Thank you for your incredible support of this campaign. As a result of your generous donations, we were able to release another 275 tourniquets to first responders and emergency departments, and are still actively manufacturing more. Credible reports indicate that a ground invasion is imminent, and this is where tourniquets will matter the most.

UPDATE: Message from the Glia Team

With the severe escalation of the current situation, we have increased our goal to $100,000 USD so that we can meet the medical needs in the weeks to come. If through some miracle the war ends soon, we will use your generous donations to equip Gaza's emergency response teams and health facilities for possible future attacks.

UPDATE: Glia Gaza Office Bombing Damage

The Israeli bombing of Gaza's Eye hospital has badly damaged Glia's Gaza office, significantly slowing our tourniquet production capability. The building was not occupied at the time. Our top priority in Gaza continues to be ensuring the best access to medical care for the victims of war, and the Gaza staff are working in significant danger to ensure tourniquets are available when needed.

We will post further updates soon.
