Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory as a means of purifying the fasting person from idle talk and foul language, and to feed the poor. Whoever pays it before the prayer (Eid Prayer), it is an accepted zakah, and whoever pays it after the prayer, it is just a kind of charity (sadaqah).” (Abu Dawood)

Why do you have to donate Zakat Al-Fitr?

Narrated/Authority of Ibn Umar:

The Messenger of Allah, may prayers and peace be upon him, enjoined the payment of one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim - slave or free, male or female, young or old - and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the 'Eid prayer. (One Sa' = 3 Kilograms approx.)

• Zakat al-Fitr is an obligatory charity every Muslim must pay before the end of Ramadan!
• Zakat al-Fitr helps purify one's Fasting during the month of Ramadan from any errors or sins, and ensures the less fortunate can celebrate Eid with dignity and joy.

• Give food, not money, for Zakat al-Fitr. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to share one saa' “3.24 kg"" of our staple food with those in need. We are encouraged to give one saa' of whatever is the staple food in our country, such as rice or wheat, on behalf of ourselves and each household member. This food will help to provide sustenance to those in need to ensure that they can break their fasts and enjoy the celebration of Eid al-Fitr without worry.
