There has never been a mainstream comedy from the point of view of a Muslim woman... until ZARQA - and we need your support.
Zarqa Nawaz created the groundbreaking show Little Mosque on the Prairie, which aired 91 episodes over 6 seasons, and now she's ready to make a comedy with more bite. Your contributions will allow us to bring ZARQA to screens around the world.
All contributions will go toward funding production of Season 1 of ZARQA. For every $1 you contribute, we're able to access a potential $9 from funding bodies in Canada. That's a 900% ROI!
We shot our trailer true to our mandate, with a predominantly BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or Person of Colour) and entirely female crew, and we plan to continue working that way. If we overshoot our funding target, we'll have the opportunity to expand from a webseries to a half-hour show.
Zarqa's ex-husband is marrying a younger, skinnier, white, yoga instructor, so Zarqa announces that she's coming to the wedding with her own cliché... a white brain surgeon named Brian. Now she just has to find him.
After Zarqa's ex callously posts his wedding announcement on Facebook, Zarqa basically has to respond in kind. Revenge is a dish best served via a dating app... for white people. Can a divorced, vindictive, slightly racist, middle aged Muslim woman convince a white man to be arm candy at her ex's wedding? Zarqa is about to cross the colour and religion line while taking everyone down with her. She's looking for payback, but might just find love instead!
Muslim comedians like Ramy Youssef (Ramy), Aziz Ansari (Master of None), and Kumail Nanjiani (the Big Sick) have been criticized for portraying white female romantic leads as the trophy, at the expense of Muslim women who are stuck playing the comic foil.
ZARQA is going to change all that!

I wanted to extend my thanks to everyone who contributed to our campaign. We couldn't have done it without you. Many have asked about next steps. I don't want anyone to be sad that we didn't make our fundraising goal. At the 11th hour, CBC Gem offered a license fee contingent that we raise $650,000, the budget for first season. We are in the process of applying for those funds. There's stiff competition out there for production monies but we have an excellent team and are confident, Inshallah, that we will raise the financing. The success of the crowdfunding campaign helps us in our application process because it shows juries that we have a wide base of support and that people have an appetite for this series.
