The Prophet (SAW) said,

"Whoever frees a Muslim slave, Allah will save all the parts of his body from the (Hell) Fire as he has freed the body-parts of the slave."

For those living in poverty, a sudden need for funds such as an emergency medical bill or a natural disaster destroying their home, forces them to borrow money they don’t have. They are tricked into working as bricklayers, earning as little as £1 a day.

They are heavily exploited, often doing life-threatening work such as operating kilns, lifting heavy bricks and working in unhealthy conditions. Entire families get trapped in this form of bonded labour, working endlessly for their freedom. If the person who borrowed the money passes away, the debt is transferred to their children, causing an endless, vicious cycle. Despised, despairing and trapped, the bonded brick kiln workers feel like slaves.

This is an obligation from Allah. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.” (Quran 9:60)

Please Help Us Change This Reality

Brick kilns are some of the most extreme working environments on earth. Uneven terrain, high temperatures and long hours also make them some of the most dangerous.

Whilst we enjoy the benefits of their hard labour with beautiful buildings, hospitals, schools, gardens and entertainment venues, millions of bricklayers are trapped. For them, there is no escape until their loan has been paid off.

They see no future, no opportunities and no freedom. But it doesn’t need to be this way. We can help pay off their debts and give them a future free from slavery. They are entitled to our Zakat, and our donations can truly save entire generations.

Indeed, charitable offerings are only to be given to the poor and the indigent, and to those who work on administering it, and to those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to free those in bondage, and to the debt-ridden, and for the cause of God, and to the wayfarer. An obligation from God. And God is all-knowing, all-wise.

Women Are At Greater Risk

Women working in this prison-like environment are disproportionately affected and at extreme risk of sexual exploitation and trafficking. Her day started at 5am and isn’t likely to end before 8pm. Not a toilet in sight, she has to sneak into the fields near by without the farmers noticing to answer the call of nature.

With no labour records, her labour is neither recognised nor valued. Nearest access to clean drinking water is eight kilometres away. A member of her family has to cycle the distance to quench their thirst. She is never paid any wages. Since wages in brick factories are on piece-rate basis, the male head of her family will be paid for the entire family’s labour.

No leave. No weekly rest. No maternity benefits. Her child will probably grow up amid dust and smoke surrounded by nothing but endless rows of raw dull brown bricks.

This is probably the story behind every building or structure we call home, office or a place of worship – built with the bricks tainted with bonded labour – a contemporary form of slavery.

If you had to think what would our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) do about this? What does it say about freeing a slave? Would they turn a blind eye, or do something about it?

Our Beloved Prophet said:

"The Most Merciful shows mercy to those who have mercy on others. Show mercy to those on earth, and the One above the heaven will show mercy to you."
