What's the issue? 

80% of the Yemeni population is in urgent need of humanitarian aid. With the Yemen conflict well into its fifth year with no end in sight, the Yemeni people have been struggling to survive a terrible famine, armed conflict, and outbreaks of disease like cholera for years, and now the coronavirus pandemic could decimate an already weakened population.

This was happening before COVID-19; how many more malnourished children will lose their lives to the deadly combination of starvation and coronavirus now?    

Officially, coronavirus cases in Yemen are below 850, with 209 deaths, but with limited testing and a healthcare system where over 50% of hospitals are closed, the real figure is likely to be much higher.

How will this campaign help solve the problem?

The aim of our Feed Our World Program is to meet hunger needs across the world, and domestically. Penny Appeal USA provides life-saving, nutritious meals, and food security programming to families most in need. These meals help combat hunger poverty in crisis-hit countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East as well as right here at home. In addition, Penny Appeal USA will be adapting to the ongoing needs by delivering hygiene kits through our Coronavirus Emergency appeal that will be distributed as part of Feed Our World.

Yemen, one of the world's poorest countries, is facing catastrophic famine — perhaps the worst in our lifetimes according to one of the UN's Humanitarian Coordinators, Mark Lowcock. In addition to the war leading over 2 million Yemenis to flee their hometowns, Yemen is also threatened by the COVID-19 pandemic. The medical situation across the country is dire. Our teams have been working in Yemen since late 2016 providing humanitarian aid and relief.

Why are we doing this campaign?

Yemen is facing the world’s largest humanitarian crisis with 24 million people starving, and one child is dying every 10 minutes according to UNICEF. Unfortunately, the Yemeni people have been suffering in silence for a long time and this humanitarian crisis hasn’t received the attention it needs and deserves. It is our responsibility to share and talk about their suffering, to shed light on their crisis, and to educate ourselves. We might not have the power to end their suffering, but we have the power to help alleviate some of their pain, so let’s purify our intentions and try to do the best we can. 

Our three PennyAppeal USA university chapters aim to contribute through education, awareness, and fundraising. Through this campaign, we plan to provide aid for food, water, medical assistance, and shelter. Join us in our efforts to help those affected by this humanitarian crisis in Yemen today.
