Dr. Badri dedicated his life to the development of Islamic psychology. His legacy will live on in work of the International Association of Islamic Psychology.

Raising Funds for the International Association of Islamic Psychology (IAIP)

Professor Dr. Malik Badri was a torchbearer for the Muslim ummah. His unparalleled work in developing the field of Islamic Psychology has paved a pathway for students, practitioners and others who wish to approach psychology in a way that aligns with the Islamic worldview, an effort needed now more than ever. With the passing of Professor Malik, the torch is passed on to the next generation. We, his family and students, hope to continue his legacy by raising funds for the initiative closest to his heart which he founded for the next generation to carry on his work, the International Association of Islamic Psychology.

Friend of Malcolm X: Malik Badri and Malik El-Shabazz

In honor of the anniversary of the death of Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X), February 21, we commemorate his endearing friendship with our beloved Prof Malik Badri. The two Maliks first met in Khartoum, Sudan in 1959 when a young 27 yr old Malik Badri hosted then Malcolm X in the African city and introduced him to traditional Islam and Muslim culture. The two kings (Malik means king in Arabic) kept in touch and developed a strong, intimate friendship over the years up until Shabazz’s assassination on February 21, 1965. Now in February 2021 Dr. Badri has insha’allah been reunited in jennah with his old friend.

The Father of Islamic Psychology

Professor Malik, who we affectionately called “Baba Malik” was unanimously known throughout the world as the father of Islamic psychology. His pioneering and visionary work in developing this field was unsurpassed by another other. He went beyond the narrow borders of his home country of Sudan to global horizons, with his books, research and theories in psychology being admired and appreciated by major international universities and research centers. Professor Badri has served as Professor and Dean in various universities including the University of Khartoum, Juba University and the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization of the International Islamic University, Malaysia. His message spoke to the global ummah as it struck a chord at the heart of what it means to be Muslim and what makes us all human. Professor Malik showed how Islam is not just a religion but that it is a map to healing the human heart. He redefined Islam and psychology, bringing them together to make us see the immense blessings and mercy that Allah has given us for the continual healing of our minds, hearts, bodies and soul.

Continuing Dr. Badri's Legacy

He will always be remembered for his brilliant mind and his incredible insights and contributions to the study of psychology in general. For those who knew him personally know that beyond his public work his real legacy is his enormous heart and good nature. Not only did he teach about Islamic psychology being about the purification of heart and soul, he was a living example of a pure soul. In his generosity and goodwill he left behind a roadmap for us all to follow individually and collectively as a global community.

"We are not emancipated yet. We don't look at our Islam as a world view and all it has to give. We superficially read stories of the Prophets in the Qur'an rather than seeing the psychological  benefits of these stories."

Professor Malik dedicated his life to the development of Islamic psychology theory and practice. He accomplished more in his 89 years than most, but he still had so much to give, with ideas, initiatives, research and programs still yet to be brought into fruition. His legacy will live on in his foundational publications, in his students, and in the mission and work of the IAIP which was his final vision for continuing the work that he started in pioneering the field of Islamic psychology. Professor Malik left us with instructions of how to take his work forward for the next generations. We need your support to bring these initiatives into existence to honor his legacy, for the sake of the ummah.

A Message from the Wife of Dr. Badri

As salaam alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu

I am Fatimah, wife of Professor Malik Badri, may Allah bless his soul. I am a lecturer at International Islamic University in Malaysia. I witnessed that Professor Malik Badri devoted most of his life for Islamic psychology. Alhumdulillah, Allah has blessed him with a spiritual insight and wisdom to develop the field of Islamic psychology at a time when religion had no place in psychology.

In 2018, he established the International Association of Islamic Psychology with Professor Rasjid Skinner and Dr. Abdallah Rothman. Professor Malik believed that the next generation of students, researchers, and practitioners can continue this blessed course. And I sincerely believe that this campaign is necessary to carry out, to carry forward his legacy.

May Allah bless you.
Dr. Fatimah Abdullah
