Qurbani is an act that benefits us. By sacrificing something of 
our own for the sake of Allah (swt) we are nurturing our Iman, strengthening our capacity for sabr and reminding ourselves of the fleeting nature of the dunya. The Qur’an also explains to us the significance of Qurbani in making us more pious. 

"Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what

reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have we subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good". (Qur’an 22:37)

By sharing a part of your Qurbani with those in need, whether Muslim or 
non-Muslim, you are sharing your blessings and promoting unity and 
harmony between all human beings. After all, every one of us is a 
creation of Allah (swt) and the Qur’an tells us: "Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves
 those who act justly". (Qur’an 60:8)

“O Fatimah! Go and witness your Qurbani, because the first drop of blood that falls from it causes all your sins to be forgiven. On the Day of Qiyamah, this animal will be brought with its blood and flesh and will be placed on your scale increasing it seventy times more. Hazrat Abu Saeed (Radiyallahu Anhu) after hearing of the great blessing asked Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) whether this great favour was only for the family of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) because they are more worthy of this good action or is it for the family of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) and the entire Muslim Ummat? Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) replied that it is for both the descendants of Rasulullah 
(Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) and the entire Ummah.”

From this Hadith two important virtues are found: The first drop of blood of the Qurbani animal causes a person’s sins to be forgiven and his scales of deeds will increase manifold. Therefore Qurbani should be done wholeheartedly. Even if it is not Wajib one should try and achieve this blessing.
