Situation in Malaysia

According to official data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the number of unemployed individuals in Malaysia grew to 610,500 compared to just over 500,000 as of the same time in 2019. Malaysia’s unemployment rate rose to 17 per cent, the highest it has been in a decade. There were 610,500 unemployed individuals from the Malaysian workforce in March alone. The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) forecast that more than 2 million Malaysians are likely to lose their jobs throughout the Covid-19 crisis. While the data did not contain projections, unemployment is expected to be significantly higher for April, the entirety of which was spent under the movement control order (MCO), as well as May, when most businesses have yet to resume fully.

Despite the country’s peace and serenity, Malaysians are feeling the crunch over the course of the pandemic Covid-19 crisis. Many are affected by current economic stagnation as ramifications of the unprecedented nationwide MCO. Poverty has hitched a ride not just to rural, but urban areas too. The vagrants are now a common sight not only in the state capital center but also in rural areas. To make matters worse, half of the people are unemployed, including the youths and the household’s breadwinners. This condition will surely take some time before it can get back on its feet. More challenging times ahead may leave a remarkable impact on the Malaysian population in different means and degree of severity.

The month of Ramadan is the time to deeply understand what such simple acts can do.

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Every Muslim has to give in charity.” The people asked, “O Allah’s Prophet! If someone has nothing to give, what will he do?” He said, “He should work with his hands and benefit himself and also give in charity (from what he earns).” The people further asked, “If he cannot find even that?” He replied, “He should help the needy who appeal for help.” Then the people asked, “If he cannot do that?” He replied, “Then he should perform good deeds and keep away from evil deeds, and this will be regarded as charitable deeds.” [Sahih Bukhari, Chapter 24, 524]

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” - Mohammed Ali

Some underserved students that we work with in Malaysia can't afford new disposable masks everyday, leading them to reuse masks and expose themselves to higher risks of COVID-19. Help us keep the children safe with reusable face masks and hand sanitizers.
