Help Uyghur Muslims in Canada Build a Mosque to Preserve Our Islamic and Cultural Identity!

On Mar 7, 2021, the Uyghur community in Canada decided to purchase a church and convert it to a Mosque. The church was built in 1873, about 21,440 sq ft, and is located in Troy, Ontario. The purchase price is $610,000 CAD and closing date is June 1, 2021. The Uyghur community is relatively small in Canada, but with the help of Allah SWT, so far we have raised $150,000 within our community and another $33,000 through the GoFundMe campaign. Now we ask our brothers and sisters around the world to help us raising the rest of the money during the blessed month- Ramadan.  We are faithful that we can fulfill our commitment to build a new masjid with the help of Allah SWT and brothers and sisters. 

The Uyghur mosque will also be an important gathering place for the Uyghurs, and a welcoming center for Uyghur Refugees coming to Canada. Various activities will also be held at the masjid such as weekend Quran tajweed classes for kids, Daily prayers, teaching the uyghur language and culture to kids so they can keep retain and be proud of their identities etc. The masjid will also be open to the wider Muslim community to hold Islamic activities and gatherings.

Uyghur Muslims have been the victims of religious and cultural oppression imposed by Communist Chinese regime since their invasion of East Turkistan in 1949. Especially after 2016, the religious suppression reached unprecedented level that more than 14,000 mosques were demolished, more than 60,000 imams and religious leaders were jailed and millions of pious Uyghur Muslims were arrested and detained in concentration camps. Last month, the Canadian parliament declared the atrocity as genocide.

As Allah says in the Quran:

"The mosques of Allah should only be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish prayer, pay alms-tax, and fear none but Allah. It is right to hope that they will be among the ˹truly˺ guided." (Quran 9:18)

"Those who in charity spend of their goods by night and by day, in secret and in public, have their reward with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve." Quran (2:274)

Uthman ibn Affan reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house like it in Paradise.” (Al-Bukhārī & Muslim)
